The Fly Guy
December 29, 2002
Here’s one of the best Christmas Cards ever - in Flash. It’s called the Fly Guy.
Upcoming Appearances
December 22, 2002
Happy Holidays, everyone!
I’ll be on the Allan Handelman show for half an hour tonight at 10:30p Eastern time. Listen on one of his many stations or on his web site at alhandelman.com.
I’m doing the Ronn Owens Show on KGO, 810 AM in San Francisco, Friday, January 3 at 10am.
We’re heading to Las Vegas to cover CES January 9-11. I’ll be signing autographs in the Grand Lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center from 4-5p on Thursday, January 9,and from 3-5p on Saturday, January 11. Cat, Morgan, and Patrick will be there, too, at various times. We’ll also be doing live show feeds for The Screen Savers, Friday, January 10, at 4p Pacific. You don’t need admission to CES to visit us, so stop on by. You know how we love a live audience!
Meanwhile, I’ve been doing some Tivo hacking during my vacation, with some interesting (and ultimately disappointing) results. I’ll do a full write up in the next couple of days. We’re celebrating Christmas at home then Jennifer is taking the kids to her folks for a few days. That should give me some time to work on the Tivo more seriously. The goal is to be able to get my Sopranos episodes onto DVD as a fully digital copy. If I can get it to work, and I can get the lawyers to say OK, I’ll demo it on TSS in the new year.

The Screen Savers own Yoshi has started a message board focusing on hardware hacking. It’s really great! Check it out at yoshi.us/forums
Let It Snow
December 6, 2002
Finally, a few personal pictures from our trip to New York. We all posed for this hoping it might make a good Christmas card, and it would except for the fact that I look like The Joker.

We just barely made it out of JFK on Thursday. The blizzard was hitting hard and our plane was covered with snow. Jennifer was petrified. But we left on time and got home safe and sound, very glad for the warm California climate.

Here’s a short video of the cab ride to the airport. The cabbie was an expert in sub-Saharan African music and played us some wonderful stuff. You can hear some in the background.
He recommended Africando (Senegal), Franco (the Jimi Hendrix of the Congo), Sekuba Bambino (Mali), Salif Keita (Mali) and the album “Talking Timbuktu” by Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder.
Live with Andy and Kelly
December 4, 2002
I did Live! today. As sometimes happens, Regis was on vacation. I usually don’t find out until the day of. I think the staff is conditioned to downplay Regis’s vacations in case guests cancel. As it happens, Andy Richter, Regis’s guest host, was great. Very funny and actually interested in the stuff. Kelly was her usual gracious and warm self. They’ve already asked me to plan another appearance in February.
Henry went with me this time. He took some pictures, yesterday during rehearsal. This is of the audience area - but, of course, there’s no one there when we rehearse.

The crew was readying the set for the holidays.

This is their Christmas tree, before decorations.

I shot this video of Henry testing out the Karaoke machine.

Last Night at World News Now
December 4, 2002
Abby came with me on Sunday night to help me shoot the World News Now segments for ABC. WNN shares the set with World News Tonight with Peter Jennings. Here’s a look at the familiar ABC News logo.

Abby took this shot, too.

Here I am getting ready for the segment.

Finally a short video starting with Abby on the WNN set. The video ends with Peter Jennings view when he does the news. The chair in the lower left corner is Jennings’s chair. As you can see he look into nothing while delivering the news. All the good looking stuff is behind him.
I’ll post pictures and video from today’s Regis rehearsal next time.
