  • At the gate. No upgrade for me but at least I have my special pillow. What the short code for Twitter SMS in Australia? #
  • @egoods Qantas. Flight 74. SFO->SYD - I got an email that I qualified for a space available upgrade so maybe they’re waiting to see. #
  • Thanks to my Clear Card, Blogger Bob of the TSA couldn’t stop me. I sailed right through security. #
  • @danielpunkass See if you had a dishwasher you could wash your sponges in it instead of boiling them but then you wouldn’t need to. #
  • @chartier No don’t David! We mentioned your article in TWiT tonight. Doesn’t that cheer you up. Probably mispronounced your name tho. #
  • @egoods I think it’s only right that the next POTUS is the most followed person on Twitter. That’s a great portent for the future. #
  • Thanks all for the Twitter in Oz info. I’ll just stick with Twitterberry and eat the data charges. #
  • Mikkel Aaland to the rescue. He secured me an upgrade for the flight. I’m still bringing my pillow though. #
  • The stew is mocking my pillow. She’ll laugh out of the other side of her mouth in a few hours! See you on the other side of the date line. #
  • Quantas is actually giving us pajamas. And they promise a kiss to wake us. #
  • Wheels down in Sydney. It’s sunrise on a beautiful day. #
  • Aussie Mike rocks! He just brought me a towel for my shower. In the Qantas biz lounge. What were you thinking? #
  • @mattpavlik It’s the Cluetrain Manifesto by @dsearles @dweinberger et al. http://cluetrain.com Too bad none of the TechTV execs read it. #
  • Mandi read my Twitter and sent her husband Sean to get a picture in the Qantas lounge. Mandy I’m sending you an autographed pocket protector #

Greetings from Sydney

March 31, 2008

Mikkel Aaland and I just arrived in Sydney on the way to Hobart, Tasmania. Qantas took great care of us on the way - it was my first time in the “bubble” up top of a 747 and I slept like a baby. Maybe that’s because they give you your very own set of jammies.

Aussie Mike met us at the gate and got us into the Qantas Club. I took a much needed shower and feel like a new man. I’m headed off to the “meetup” at the SYD Starbucks. Hope to see a few of you there!

  • Putting The Wire Season 5 on the iPod for the plane trip. That should get me to the International Date Line anyway. #
  • Just upgraded to Wordpress 2.5 - painless upgrade and pretty new admin interface. Recommended. #
  • @schappim I’ll be at the SYD Starbucks til 1p, but I can’t stay later. My flight to Hobart leaves at 2. Sorry! Need to do a Hobart meet too! #
  • @dwwithnall Flying Quantas SFO to SYD tonight. SYD to Hobart Tuesday. Unfortunately, I’m only in Tasmania this trip, through 14 April. #
  • Dream TWiT Panel? @davewiner, @jasoncalacanis, @adamcurry, @rocketboom, and Woz. And we’ll talk only of Twitter. . . . Dream on! #
  • @Ihnatko Awww Andy! I was being facaetious, right? They’d tear each others’ eyes out. Although @paulkent want to do a MacWorld cage match. #

Live From Down Under

March 30, 2008

April 5 and 6 I’ll be broadcasting the radio show live from Sea FM/Heart 107.3 Hobart, TAS, Australia. It’ll be 4-7 am Sunday and Monday local time, but the show will air at its normal time here in the Northern Hemisphere! I’ll be taking calls as usual, and if I can wake anyone up at that hour there may be some special Tasmanian guests, as well.

Speak Softly And Carry A Big Camera Bag

E516BAC6-63A8-49F7-9485-219BAB5F5AED.jpgI’m leaving tonight for Australia on the Adobe Lightroom/Photoshop Adventure 2008: Tasmania!

My good friend Mikkel Aaland, author of O’Reilly’s Lightroom Adventure is leading another photo expedition; this time it’s to Tasmania with a bunch of the world’s top photographers for the next edition of his book and he invited me to come. I couldn’t resist even though I’m no photo pro. (They’re billing me as a “special media guest.”)

skitched-20080330-054212.jpgI do apologize to my friends on the mainland - the itinerary is limited to Tassie: A week in Hobart and a week in the wild. Our Qantas flight does stopover for seven hours in Sydney, so thanks to Aussie Mike, we’ll do an impromptu meetup at the Starbucks at Terminal 3, Sydney Airport, 11a-1p on Tuesday. (It’s a 12-hour flight and we cross the International Date Line so even though I’m leaving Sunday night I won’t arrive in Sydney until Tuesday morning!) If there are any fans in Hobart who want to set up a meet up on Thursday or Friday let me know.

I’ll be doing my radio show from Sea FM/Heart 107.3 Hobart Sunday and Monday morning 4-7a local time (Tasmania is UTC +11 but it’ll be live in the States). The following week I won’t have access to a studio so we’ll air two shows I’ve recorded ahead of time with all new material.

I’m bringing enough gear to equip a multimedia army.

5B4F3A1F-D205-48DD-A2B1-BF91605AA9F2.jpgAll this fits into my Lowepro CompuTrekker Plus AW backpack (it’s huge) but I’m also bringing a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW to carry into the field.

And a change of underwear.

Thank goodness I’m not going by ship. I think I’d sink it.

There’s a reason for all this gear. I’ll be blogging the whole time I’m Down Under, including photos (on Smugmug and Flickr), audio (here), and video (on Smugmug and Viddler) so watch this space. Many of the other photographers will be blogging as well on the O’Reilly blog site.

  • The HHB Flashmic froze up on its first assignment - a field recording I can’t replicate. It’s dead and I’m pissed. FAIL #
  • I left the batteries out of the FlashMic all night and now it seems to be working normally. I still think I’ll bring a backup to Tassie. #
  • @loiclemeur Instead of LOI - laughing on the inside, how about MA - mildly amused. If it’s really funny use SMTN, snorting milk through nose #
  • @om Vista runs fine in Bootcamp, but I’ve never had very good results with it in VMWare or Parallels - XP is better in a vm on the Mac. #
  • I’m planning a little meetup at the Sydney Airport Domestic Terminal. Stop by the Starbucks at 11a 1-Apr. This is not a joke. #

  • Only one pillow will get to go to Tasmania with me. Tonight I’m auditioning the candidates. #
  • @RickMacMerc Is he having a laugh? He’s having a laugh! #
  • Retweeting @drtiki (retweeting @stevegarfield ) this documentary on text adventures looks fascinating: http://tinyurl.com/23g3my #
  • I’ll never regret the hours I spent exploring Colossal Cave at 300 baud on CompuServe. (Thank goodness for buddy Owen’s free account!) #
  • Dear @ev: Last night I dreamed a tweet, got up to post it, then went back to bed. Do I have a problem? Signed: Prostrate in Petaluma #
  • @StephAgresta Don’t do it. No matter how many followers @jasoncalacanis has, he will always have an asterisk next to his name. #
  • @timbray I like Twhirl better than Twitteriffic for two reasons: cross posting to Pownce and Jaiku, and multiple account windows. #
  • @adamengst PLUGH! but what does XYZZY do? And for ten extra points, where else might you see that term? #

  • Every year I do my taxes and every year I say the same things: where did that money go? why didn’t I pay estimated tax? where are my pants? #
  • Windows Weekly 54 with Paul Thurrott is titled "Hooking Up With Hot Women." It contains no content that would help you hook up with anyone. #
  • Just ordered a T1 from Covad (1.536Mb up and down) for $379/month with 2 year contract. We’ll use it for streaming video for TWiT Live. #

  • Stupid Visa - locked out again. The telephone rep was a fan. Helped me unlock the account. Still can’t get in. I just want to pay my bill! #
  • I hate rubber pillows. I just wish feather pillows didn’t take up so much space in my luggage. I feel like a dork carrying one under my arm. #
