Best Banner Ad Ever
Posted By Leo On October 18, 2002 @ 12:39 pm In Blog | No Comments
I know I’m just falling for BMW’s viral marketing ploy, but I can’t help but admire the clever ad campaign they’ve created just for web junkies. If you like a good mystery, visit the Apple MPEG-4 page [1] and click on the :k: link at the bottom. Just remember, like a polar bear in a snow storm, not all is as it seems.
Thanks to RyanR who pointed this out on the message boards. For bonus fun try Tron20.net [2]. (Thanks to trallyus for that one.)

I’m still trying to figure the :k: link out; it intrigues me, however, and I’ll get to the bottom of this! Thanks for posting conceptual art-type stuff like this, Leo. That Tron20 link is fascinating, too.

To clarify: Anyone wandering into this blog, my suggestion is to visit the Apple MPEG-4 page before reading the posts here! Because everyone loves a good mystery, and nobody likes when a mystery is spoiled (which is always a possibility in public forums like this)!

Oh, and by the way, I don’t mean to insinuate than any of Leoville’s visitors would dare to spoil the fun!

I got the 6 keys but can’t figure out the serial number to register for the contest. Anyone got any hints for the serial number?
Intriguing…I just have to look into it deeper. Too tired right now.
I figured it out!! its’ my super skills. It is a lil’ more than a polar bear on snow… BTW it not only requires some hypertext markup lanuage, but some french.
umm…I only have 5 keys…I GIVE UP!
Leo,
Thanks for making me and RyanR famous for 15 minutes
By the way , if you dont like those 2 that were givin , there are others as well
Like http://www.secondstate.com/ , http://abc.abcnews.go.com/primetime/push/how_to_play.html , http://abc.abcnews.go.com/primetime/alias/adv.html ,http://www.timehunt.com/ .
all these were from http://www.unfiction.com site I just joined
They also have alot of tools to use for these type games . Also try http://www.cloudmakers.org/othergames/
Cloudmakers started it all when the A.I. craze was there
In fact they have the whole A.I. clues archived I believe and its huge
My cousin broke into router 2 tonight on the tron server and saw all these files , but forgot the darn password and login name , so I cant see what she saw
now shes typing up all her keywords and emailing me them in hopes we can re-crack it
Thanks Leo for putting these type games back out to the publics eye , as they pretty much get overlooked with all the negative comments about internet sites .
Trallyus
Leo,
by the way , its not Tallyrus , it’s Trallyus
No biggie
Oww … my head hurts. Make it stop.
I too have a special place in my heart for such cleaver advertisments….but not enough to make my plunk down the cash for a BMW.
Besides, you can’t attach a plow to it!

Hey Leo, there is a whole site for these and other games:
http://www.collectivedetective.org
It is a great site (in my opinion) also avalable is http://www.timehunt.com amongst others!
Wow, this is fun.. well.. not really fun, but interesting!
Doesn’t seem to work in Mozilla 1.2b on Mac OSX.
Ummm… A polar bear in a snow storm? Does the bear speak french?
The Apple page is actually clue 2 in the whole mystery. Go to http://209.46.98.251 to start at the beginning.
I have tried Mozilla 1.0.1, Netscape 6 and I.E. 5 on MacOSX and haven’t seen anything but a plain white page. Is it just me?
yes, it is just you. a polar bear in a snow storm, dude.
IS there any site or group set up to talk through this…ummm…mystery? I’m having trouble with it….still no keys. What am I missing?
Email me if you can help:

There are a few places around that deal with alternate reality games and such. Aside from the aforementioned, there’s also http://www.unfiction.com and http://www.argn.com
Unfiction has an active forum, while ARGN’s is closed but available as an archive.
I didn’t think I was stupid untill I couldn’t figure out this puzzle. What’s with the classified ad??? How could I read that? Hook me up the keys please or i will go crazy. Thank you K-dogg
By the way, the person who wrote the French has terrible grammer. He is obviously English speaking. He also has an incomplete sentance on his info page. (just frustrated I can’t figure out the keys and venting it out, lol)
crap cant find keys…
Well did you figure it out Fabian ??? How long did it take you? haha , Derik

The worms seem to be playing CHESS, not pinochle…
Thanks for getting me completely hooked, Leo, only to find out that only U.S. residents are eligible to “win”.
Gret fun, though – it was the most fun I’ve had surfing the web since I used to win $20 at the local record store for getting their music quizzes right!
It’s a french canadian bear in a snow storm!!
I don’t think this advertisment is a good use of time. I really think it would have been better if you didn’t have to watch the bmwfilm, call long distance, and send stuff in the mail. If it was all on the internet i would have kept interest. And for all you suckers who think your cool for “figuring it out”. You are not smart, just slaves of another advertisement. lol.
Rumor has it, the winner of the car was indeed a “Collective Detective”. After Collective Detectives got on the case, we had all 6 keys in record time. And of course we share our answers. I was the 34th person to enter the contest but unfortunately I didn’t win the car. Currently the “big games” we’re into are: http://www.timehunt.com , http://www.chasingthewish.com , and we’ve even got a forum dedicated to solving the puzzling book, “Mysterious Stranger” which offers a cool treasure hunt.
Um, a little correction there, Misha.
The BMW winners were not members of any online community whatsoever. I was there. I talked to them. Check out http://www.unfiction.com/compendi/features/uncap.html for the firsthand story.
