Big Sur travelogue

Posted By On April 23, 2001 @ 2:50 am In Blog | No Comments

Ahhh. We had a wonderful time in Big Sur. We stayed at Ventana - a luxurious inn near Big Sur village. It’s where we honeymooned 10 years ago and it was just as we remembered it. Quiet, romantic, cozy, and comfortable.

Saturday we had brunch at the new Café Kevah at Nepenthe. Nepenthe, for those who don’t know, is a Big Sur institution. Orson Welles bought the property for Rita Hayworth for $167 during the war but they never returned. Since 1949 it has been a restaurant and hangout serving a famous hamburger around the open phoenix decorated fireplace. Check out their webcam for an idea of how lovely the view is.

But our best meal was Saturday night at Sierra Mar, the restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn across the street from Ventana. First of all, the view is remarkable. The Post Ranch Inn is built on a cliff overlooking the Pacific. We sat in a corner of the restaurant that feels like it’s flying high out over the ocean then watched the sun set as we ate one of the best meals we’ve ever had. (If you look at the picture of the restaurant on their webpage, you can see where we sat. It’s the table for two in the center of the picture at the very back.)

We’ve decided to stay at the Post Ranch Inn for my birthday this year! I can’t wait to go back.

    Congrats Leo.

I have a question for you and anyone else also. Think Windows XP will live up to the hype and will you buy it as soon as it comes out? I think I will but I wanna know what you guys think. I’ve always gotta have the latest and greatest.

  18. Anonymous on April 23rd, 2001 8:52 pm

I’m sure all of us are jealous of Austin residents. I would love for you to do a show in our area, (WPB, Florida in case your taking petitions), but generally I’m not a fanatical fan there’s just things I’d like to say in person and of course there’s always a list of computer questions plaguing me. I’m glad you enjoyed your anniversary. It sounds like you had a lot of fun. There are many rewards in life, and it seems like you have put dibs on all of the important ones.

I visit very few web sites. The very nature of the internet almost seems like a scam all around. The idea of cookies almost seems unorthodox and now that I hear that unscrupulous sites are looking over our info from other sites I’m not very happy about it. All I really need from the internet is downloads. Email needs to be revamped so that no one can read our mail but the person we send it to. Sure I visit some sites, but the number has come way down in the past few years. I no longer go to see sites on a whim like the nude jumping jack site my radio station suggested. We should all know by now that nothing is free. Anytime we get something for nothing there’s often a catch of which we’re unaware. It’s said that if you build a better mousetrap the world will beat a path to your door. Bill Gates applied Apple’s graphic user interface to the vast majority of computers in circulation on that principal. I personally hope linux rescues the world from what I consider to be a terrible operating system. Bill has done a lot of good over the years. I am grateful for his competition against Sony in the console wars, (although I know he’s doing it for insurance and self preservation, at least all that money he ensorceled us to pay has a benefit of sorts), but he’s also forcing us to use his brand simply because nothing else has as many programs written for it. Linux is the right idea. Just being able to install an OS in minutes on top of windows for free or next to nothing is mind boggling. When all, or nearly everyone has it Bill will no longer have us over the proverbial barrel.

    Re: XP

If you don’t want to install the software on any other computer (or even the same computer with a few different components), like calling MS support and waiting for vital information everytime you have to do a reinstall of the OS, and like the idea of an OS that is essentially spyware, then XP is for you.

I’d suggest trying out an alternate OS or sticking with something like 98 or 2K.

    Leo,

Glad you had a good time! I wish we had things that pretty in Georgia. I live in the boonies 60 miles south of Atlanta and we get nothing but smog!

I’d love to see California some day.

    Have a good week,

    Joseph

  25. Anonymous on April 23rd, 2001 10:53 pm

Sounds like Joseph’s already seen Los Angeles…

Ooops, might I add please (hate to be rude)

  27. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 12:54 am

No offense Leo, but button your shirt (see netcam photo).

  28. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 1:28 am

Big Sur was a great choice. I prefer the Giant Redwoods up north, but I’m a little more rustic. My wife and I honeymooned in the Sequois 21 years ago in November and we hope to get back there some day.

If I had the kind of day Leo usually has, my shirt would be unbuttoned at the end of the day too…besides, us geek girls like seeing a little bit of skin…;>)

I would just like to second what Cheryl said. Oh sure, Leo, we love you for your heart and mind, no question. But if you show a little skin that’s just the icing on the cake, baby!

Welcome back from Big Sur, glad you had a great weekend.

    Intel Conspiracy!

Tonights show wasnt taped for some reason, and the truth behind the 1.7 Ghz chip will now be lost….

Not to mention that martins makeover is now lost, which in my opinion is a good thing. I dont mean to sound like a jerk, but once I saw that woman, I knew the makeover was gonna be.. er… of a different taste than I have.

Of course, it’s all worth it just to read Martins write up of it on the web site. man, talk about tell it like it is!

  33. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 5:24 am

I noticed the same thing Aaron… I saw about half of TSS live and decided to watch the 1am (EDT) rerun and suddenly it’s an older show! What happened? The only other time I remember this happening was the night the power went out… (There may have been other times but I don’t remember them =P)

  34. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 5:45 am

Josh, actually if you check the show notes they explain what happened, well s much as they dare without pointing any fingers…

They should have re-run the show with the episode where the power went out, that would have been classic!

Hope I still get a cool T-shirt, even though the show no longer exists!

  35. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 8:55 am

i would like to know the diffrence between the pentium4 1.5Ghz and the 1.7Ghz is only 1%????????????????????

come on intel can do better than that.

is it really worth spending more money for the extra 1%.

i wouldnt buy it would you?????????????????

    email with your ideas

    id like to hear them

  36. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 1:32 pm

Oh, Leo- you’re making me homesick! We lived in SF for many years, and the last two things we did before we left (nearly 20 years ago!) were walk across the GG Bridge, and drive down to Big Sur to have lunch at Nepenthe. We’ve been discussing a return trip this summer- and you’ve just convinced me I’ve been gone too long.

    Thanks-

Which boy band is Martin going to join now with his “kewl” new look?

  39. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 5:02 pm

Hey Leo, It’s great to hear that you guys had a great time. :-)

  40. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 5:39 pm

Martin already has a boy band. They were created as part of a Call For Help segment, and briefly mentioned on The Screen Savers at one point, I believe. I think the name of the band was “E-Male”, but I could be mistaken.

  41. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 6:09 pm

    Alright, NOW I’m frightened.

  42. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 8:43 pm

E-Male huh ? I guess they can go on screensavers tours as the opening act.

  45. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 8:49 pm

Oh man. sorry guys. I did something I always hate… posting same thing more than once.

  46. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 10:33 pm

I missed yesterday’s show. I tried to catch it at 1am but it was an old show. What exactly happened?

  47. Anonymous on April 24th, 2001 11:05 pm

I missed the whole Martin unveiling because they didn’t re-air the episode.

PS I had this really wierd dream last night. In this dream they decided for no discernible reason to do The Screen Savers live from my living room. Exactly three people were present. Leo, Patrick, and some guy whose job was to set up the cameras and lighting. They got this call they couldn’t answer and I impressed everyone with my encyclopedic knowledge of computers. Then I got bored and played with my Texas instruments calculator for the rest of the show. When they packed up and went back to San Francisco they left a bunch of expensive computers so I was pretty happy.

  48. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 1:12 am

I tape the show most nights during the early version if I’m able to as I was last night. If anyone wants a copy I will mail it to one person. after that it’s up to the rest of you who want it to pass it around. It was the usual stuff, always informative and funny. I wouldn’t have recognized Martin. I did like the two windows tips one of which I don’t think was in the show notes. I’d also like to know if Megan and Jessica are not just glued to their chairs, but really can’t walk. Leo you’re such a humanitarian!

  49. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 1:41 am

Don’t forget to mention Ted that it was another one of those all nude episodes that only seem to be on when nobody sees it.

  50. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 4:27 am

Tried the “CIP” program (got it off of cnet/downloads)and it is awesome baby! You’re right Leo, that was a great tip. Folks, if you missed it, Leo mentioned CIP as a program that looks up IP addresses and makes browsing faster, it creates a new “host file” that uses IP addresses (numbers) so you don’t have to use the DNS server for looking up the web addresses for your regular bookmark/favorites file. worth a try. Leo you rule! (BTW: wasn’t mentioned in the show notes, but I got to see the 7 pm show!)

  51. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 4:49 am

Happy aniversary! And I hope you have many more.

  52. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 5:19 am

The band was E-male and they did do an MP3. I actually have a copy of it. It’s uh nice…yeah nice that’s it. I don’t know if it’s still around but the MP3 was called “Download My Love” it might be on the net somewhere. (just adding to the mass of comments)

  53. Anonymous on April 25th, 2001 5:20 am

This is just a completely random comment here ….

So I’m sure everyone is familiar with the brilliant “Silver Lightning” or whatever it is it’s called – that electric motor scooter thing! One of my favorite parts of that commercial is where they go, “Much safer than those dangerous gas powered scooters!” Of course, I have never seen nor heard of gas powered scooters, and for crying out loud, who would want to own one?

Anyways, on my way to class this afternoon I see … yes, a “dangerous gas powered scooter.” And I swear it was the same one that’s in the Silver Lightning commerical. This kid was showing it of to all his buddies. And they seemed oddly impressed ….

And that is my story. Glad you had a good weekend Leo. =)

I found the E-Male MP3!! ROTFL! This is so funny ^_^

    Get it here:

You’ll see a link on the right to the MP3 on the guy’s i-drive account.
