Desktop Blogging Software

I‘m doing a segment tonight on The Screen Savers on the easy way to publish your blog. Thanks to Blogger and Userland Frontier, there’s a standard way for third-party programs to interact with your blog, making it possible to publish and edit your blog from any wired computer without using the browser interface.

The web services piece is called XML-RPC and was developed by Userland in 1999. Blogger created a standard blog API for XML-RPC which it and many blogging programs support, including the program I use, Movable Type.

For example, I’m posting this entry from a desktop tool for Mac OS X named Kung-Log. The program works with Movable Type- and Nucleus-based blogs. Kung-Log offers all sorts of additional features inculding image uploads, customizable shortcuts for HTML tags I use a lot, local drafts, support for inserting the iTunes track now playing, email notifications (over and above those offered by Movable Type), and local previews so I can make sure my entry will look like it’s supposed to. Kung-Log was written in Cocoa by Adriaan Tijsseling (no I won’t try to say that on TV) and is donation-ware. Send him money – he deserves it.

On the Windows side I use an equally useful program called w.bloggar. Written in Visual Basic by Marcelo L. L. Cabral, w.bloggar supports Blogger, b2, MovableType, Nucleus, BigBlogTool , BlogWorks XML, Blogalia, and Drupal blogs. Basically anything that uses the Blogger API. It’s a dynamite program that does everything Kung-Log does and more. It’s free, too.

What desktop blogging tool do you use? And would you read a blog by Patrick Norton? Post your comments here!

I have a blog through uJournal, and they suggest using Semagic. I like it, and it works well. And Patrick, you really need your own site, or blog, or SOMETHING!

  3. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 10:47 pm

I’ve tried a couple tools, but i need to upgrade my MT installation to get them to work… I think I’m missing some SOAP or RPC components… Other than that I looked at Kung-log on OS X, but like the Net Newswire interface better.

And yes, Mr. Norton needs to get his kilted butt online and at least blog, if not /set up a website/! ;)

I use w.bloggar I found it from one of my blogging friends. It’s a great tool. I would reccommend it to any Windows user.

I think it would be interesting to see Patrick using a blog. So, sure, I would read Patrick’s blog if he had one.

I am a big fan of AMD processors and speed tweaks…I think if nothing else Patrick should start a blog on the frying of AMD processors and other electronical stirfry.

  6. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:01 pm

YES!!! Patrick Needs a blog. Get wired Pat. Whats your prob? Are you going to be the last person to actually have a blog? I am 11 years and have my own website, http://randytown.vze.com man.

  7. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:02 pm

I have been using w.bloggar for several months and I love it. I love the fact that it supports image upload, unlike most of the other tools and it is compatible with multiple blog programs. It’s also great for editing older posts, as I manage a group weblog and sometimes people will make a couple mistakes. With w.bloggar it takes me like 10 seconds to go in and fix the post. Now that there is auto-trackbacking in Moveable Type, I hardly ever use the web interface since posts I link to are automatically pinged.

I also really like NewzCrawler as it is an RSS aggregator/blogging tool. It still has some bugs in it, but I use that a lot for blogging news items and things like that. It’s also one of the few blogging tools I’ve seen that supports sub-categories. No image uploading yet though.

  8. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:03 pm

Yes, I think I would read Patricks Blog if he wrote one. From what I can tell, he’s an intelligent guy, and it’d be interesting to hear what he had to say. Then again, some people just arn’t blog people, and we shouldn’t force him to blog if he doesn’t want to.

Sure, I’d read Patrick’s blog if he were to have one, he does good work on the show. I bet he’s got a mean streak a mile wide. That’d make for some interesting reading.

  16. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:29 pm

Pat needs a blog. He has legions of fans out there- he needs to stop being so humble and join the rest of us with a blog!

I use semagic, and love it, for all of the reasons you’ve listed on the show today. It intergrates html, and acts as a lovely editor.

Make sure pat reads these posts!

  17. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:31 pm

Pat needs a Blog, so he can tell us all the things Leo does off camera, and so we can learn the truth about Leo’s hair.

  18. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:31 pm

hey leo… i don’t use any desktop s/w to blog, but at http://www.xanga.com, you can upload your blogs straight from your site… and pics, etc.

btw, i met you a few years ago at colonial c.c. in fort worth…

    Translation: Yes.

    ;) Amanda

  21. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:51 pm

YES! I’ve said it before and I will say it again, PATRICK NEEDS A BLOG! (Yes, shouting was required for that). I would check up on it everyday, or more likely every few hours, just as long as he kept posting, or other people kept putting up comments. Patrick is a great guy, after the brief meeting we had I would love to hear more about him!

So, in summary, yes, get Patrick on the bandwagon with blogging!

  22. Anonymous on April 7th, 2003 11:51 pm

If Patrick wants a life outside of Geek World, I say go for it. Freedom from the tyranny of a blog for Patrick.

  23. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 12:04 am

Now, was that a blatant bait comment or what? Of course we want Patrick to blog – who wouldn’t want to hear his take on world events, tech, Leo, music, or even Peeps? Come on Patrick, the masses await you!

Wait – is that Patrick I hear running and screaming in the background? ;)

  24. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 12:24 am

I use w.bloggar for my blog, too. Up with Patrick’s blog!

    Patrick needs a blog!

  26. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 12:44 am

i have a blog, but it’s more like an ever-growing webpage. i just add stuff on and hope it works… tell patrick to get a blog and to make it better than mine! ooh! maybe he can have one devoted to his shirts and your shoes. that’d rock! (says the girl with both monkey and knee socks on at the same time…)

  27. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:01 am

I just installed w.bloggar and love it, thanks for the link. I agree that Patrick should get a Blog started, you know he would have lots to share… AMD, Punk Rock, and the occasional frying of processors, need I say more? :x

Race the Blog Patrick… oh wait wrong Company lol. In all seriousness, yeah I think it would be great to see Patick post his views, thoughts and such, also a great way for him to interact with fans.

  28. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:14 am

I use BLOG v7.1 (http://www.farook.org/Blog.htm). Its a decent software and the developer is always willing to help you out with your questions.

  29. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:37 am

I use w.bloggar for my MT blog. And YES, Patrick should start a blog!

  30. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:39 am

I would definitely read Patrick’s log. I’m not into weblogging all that much, but I do read weblogs of those that I respect and if Patrick had a weblog, I would definitely read it.

  31. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:39 am

Leo tell Patrick that we need more Patricks on the web so blog darn it blog!!! He could blog about his mods, or how his MP3 is coming along ( couldn’t resist) or maybe “My Life With Leo”. He needs to just do it, or is he just a little scared to put it out there.

  32. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:41 am

How about its-not-a-dress-folks.com for Pat …

I am pro-blog for anyone who breathes.

Pat has enough whuffie to make what he has to stay worth blogging.

  33. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:46 am

    MOVABLE TYPE!!! All the way!

  34. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:49 am

Patrick definitely needs to blog. I’d set that as my homepage.

  35. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 2:06 am

PAT START A BLOG OR WEBPAGE!!!! haha

Pat Definately needs a blog that way all of us can read some of his thoughts on things. Heck Megan has one, morgan webb, Leo, I even think Kat Schwartz has one. Im even thinking about blogging but, then again who’d read it? lol.

I use a very simple application called iBlog. I use it because it allows me to post a blog using my Dot Mac account. Granted it’s not the fanciest thing in the world, but it’s simple to use and let’s me use disk space I already pay for. If your a Dot Mac subscriber and want a way to use the space you pay so dearly for, try it out.

  39. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 3:23 am

Would we read Patrick’s blog? You betcha! But Patrick to me appears to be a truly personal guy. Sometimes I think I see him overwhelmed with opinions on a topic but doesn’t want to share them. If that’s the case, it’s obvious he likes what he does with computers or music or cars, so maybe he might just want to write about that and nothing really personal. I’d love to know what Patrick thinks on a lot of topics he doesn’t seem to comment about, but yet his facial expressions show he’s thinking something.

  40. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 3:42 am

RESIST TEMPTATION PATRICK, DON’T GIVE IN TO BLOG PEER PRESSURE!

  41. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 3:58 am

Thank’s for the link and comments about w.bloggar, I’m working on to improve it each day!

Tell Patrick to stop goofing around with his kilts and build an fsking blog! I’d read it. :)

Seriously, tell him to build a blog. The people have spoken.

  43. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 4:32 am

I use the Semagic Livejournal Client to update my Livejournal/blog/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. And yes, I’d read a blog by Patrick.

  44. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 4:49 am

Patrick is the coolest person ever!!!!!!!!!!! He so needs a blog. I would love to hear what goes on inside the mind of Patrick Norton!!!!!!

  45. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 5:23 am

Topics we’ll probably see on Pat’s Blog:

The trajectory of the amazing Mike Watt

Punk bands Screeching Weasel, Rancid, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and their social implications

AMD Processor in an iBook – can it be done?

  46. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 5:43 am

    Any blogging programs for Linux?

  47. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 6:34 am

    Rajinder

Just curious are you using MoveableType (MT) as your blog software? If you are there is a really good tool built into MT class bookmarklets and I use it a lot when my blog is working. There is also LiveLizard in Mozilla that might work as well. I am not as familiar with that as I am the bookmarklet feature in MT.

    Hope that helps

  48. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 6:46 am

I have been blogging since October on Blogger. Then this weekend I gave Userland a try using Radio as a blogging interface/tool. It was easy to use and you dont even have to be online while you update the blog. Pluse you get a 30 day trial with Radio. For the price of $39.95. I would much prefer Userland than Blogger who is asking for $60.00 for upgrading to Blogger Pro.

TechTV fuses units; 7 jobs cut

    April 05, 2003

TechTV is in the process of consolidating production units, an initiative that resulted in the loss of seven staff positions Thursday. A spokeswoman said the changes were to increase production efficiencies. “Some of our original programming is going to share production teams since they already share so many topics and resources,” she said. Staffing now being added for “Unscrewed With Martin Sargent” and “X-Play” will result in a net growth in personnel numbers, the spokeswoman added. In a related move, Chris Pirillo was replaced by Leo Laporte as host of “Call for Help.” Laporte, who was the original host of the advice program, will continue as the host of “Fresh Gear.” Fellow host Sumi Das is unaffected by the changes.” (Chris Marlowe)

Patrick — blog, sir. I know you’re resistant, but it’s really fun.

  51. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 11:36 am

I use ThingamaBlog. It’s a free standalone Java blogging tool. It works on Linux, Windows, MacOSX, etc etc. It’s still in early development, but it works okay for basic blogging tasks.

Of course Patrick needs a blog! I bet what he thinks is more interesting than what most people write about. It’s gotta be more interesting than what I write about.

  53. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 12:59 pm

i would say everbody has a blog, but that isn’t true. Everybody should have a blog! Come on Patrick and get a blog, or at least a website where we can post and make fun of you for not having one!

  54. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:42 pm

Heck yeah Patrick needs a blog. And here I thought I was the last geek on earth to start one, turns out there’s at least one more!!!!

I’ve been using and loving Blogger Pro, but am playing with w.bloggar today per Leo’s suggestion on TSS last night. So far, I like it a lot.

  55. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 1:52 pm

    Why no love for Livejournal?

Screw Patrick getting a blog.. Martin needs an outlet for his madness.. Too much monitor radiation does strange things to that boy

  57. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 2:44 pm

I use plain jane HTML right now for my fake blog.. I can’t change anything with programs since the page is originally spoofed from Leo’s blog. anyways.. I use plain HTML for my actual blog. I think the geek factor is much higher that way, and it makes me feel special.

I update my fake blog more than i update my own blog!

Leo Laporte shaved his goats? How much better does it get than that!

  58. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 3:16 pm

I recently got Apache running on my RH8 box, but I’m using BLOGGER to create my main page. I’m really kind of a rookie, so I’m going to have to check out the site to see what I missed last night.

Oh, yeah, I’d read a blog by Patrick. I’m curious to see if he’s really as much of a car guy as I think he may be.

  59. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 3:49 pm

    I use pmachine

  60. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 4:30 pm

  61. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 4:32 pm

When I was putting together a list of TechTV personality blogs last week, I was surprised that Pat doesn’t already have a blog. C’mon Pat, join the addict- I mean, revolution :)

  62. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 6:54 pm

    I’m a Xanga blogger.

It has made it easy easy easy.

  64. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 8:22 pm

NewzCrawler so far, and enjoying it.

One-stop blogging/feeding etc. Well, I still have to feed the cat of course…but I’m lobbying the app’s author for that feature as well. He’s very supportive of his product and his users, so I’m optimistic.

it posts to blogger, MT and (I think) some others, I am able to blog to my BlogWorksXML with some minor edits in the posting prompts; presumeably BlogWorksXML seems to comply with the Blogger format.

  65. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 8:29 pm

PS: I forgot to vote – YES Patrick do a blog! I’ll subscribe faithfully, just be aware that Leo’s is my first luv, so keep that in mind and you’ll have my secondary worship ;)

  66. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 8:40 pm

I want pat to get a blog!! I would read it every 12.125 minutes (That is 12 and 1/8 of a minute for those of you who dont remember math class)

  67. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 8:53 pm

    I use a blog on

    http://friscow.journalspace.com/

I believe it was recommended by one of the TSS people.

    J-space uses the journalspace poster.

it seems to work ok. I have only used it once. =)

    YES… LEO… GET A BLOGGER!!! -Frisco

  68. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 9:00 pm

Can’t say “Adriaan Tijsseling” on TV? :)

Say “Adriaan” like Adrian in English, then the “ij” in “Tijsseling” is just like the “i” in “pine”. Just like that!

  71. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 10:41 pm

Patrick does need his own website or blog. I have my own site on geocities for 2 years now, and a blog on blogger.com. Both excellent resources.

  72. Anonymous on April 8th, 2003 11:33 pm

I still like Radio UserLand — sue me. But, you might check into some of the new .NET-based webloggers. http://erablog.net for instance.

Also, there’s a freaking cool new RSS Aggregator out there called “Sharp Reader.” Check it out here: http://www.hutteman.com/weblog/2003/04/06.html#000056

  77. Anonymous on April 9th, 2003 6:31 am

I would definetly read Patrick’s blog. But just to note, he would not get my homepage slot. Morgan has it already.

Leo, do actually test out the software the you recommend?? This w.bloggar, software. Completely useless!! or it could ruin your systeme. It absolutely does nothing or functions what the author of w.bloggar claims what it suppose to do. All it could do on my pc is be bring everything to screeching hault. I could not even uninstall this thing. Lucky for me i could manually delete w.bloggar, safe mode. I would advise everyone to steer clear of w.bloggar.

Yes, Patrick needs to Blog, he can start with his mp3 jukebox he is building.

I am thinking of adding blog to my site. What is a good one for Redhat Linux 8?

I have a Sony DirecTV/TiVo SAT-60, start blogging about your hacking experience, so I can do it to mine.

  106. Anonymous on April 12th, 2003 7:02 pm

    Patrick should definetly blog

  107. Anonymous on April 13th, 2003 3:19 am

Patrick should have a website, a blog would be good, but, if he’s afraid he wouldn’t have enough content, or not have anything to say, he could:

put up a message board, and have subjects that he is interested in on it, music, offroad racing, computers, etc.

C’mon Patrick! put together a website!

Definitely! Patrick my man, i would definitely

recommend you start a BLOG it is like one of the

COOLEST Things you can do on the Internet and it’s one of the many ways you can do what you do best: SPEAK YOUR MIND!!! (LOL) as an avid fan and regular watcher of the Screen Savers there is no question in my mind that this is the right thing for you!!

Hi, i am new to blogs , i have seen many around. I am just wondering. I want to start my own website. I would like to get my own domain. I am just wonder as a Canadian , i would like it if there was a domain host out there that didn’t cost alot. I am looking toward $10-15 a year. I was thinking of getting my name as a .com , but it’s already taken. How can i get it? If there is not way i can get it back , that’s fine with me. I will just change it around a bit. But anways. I wanted to make a site where people such as my friends and family members can go check out my blog. And look at some pictures, check out my awards and achivements. Also show some pictures of my work. I was thinking of doing this because it would be a good way to get a job. If there are some sites which i can get tips on working with blogs. Please let me know. Leo i am not a MAC fan. I am wondering how you got this blog to work. I didn’t see your segment on tech tv. So i am real lost. I know how to make websites , i have done alot before. I am just wondering how a blog would work in to. Thanks for the help in advanced.

You should at least check out Dean Allen’s Textpattern ( http://www.textpattern.com ). I plan on switching my Pro.Blogger enabled site over to it next weekend at my site: http://stingthebee.nu

Dean Allen’s site is at http://www.textism.com He made this great little tool called “Refer” Refer is a web application that tracks incoming referrers (visitors who followed a link found elsewhere) to a web site and creates an up-to-the-minute list of referrers, in reverse chronological order, and is displayed on a page.

I enjoy the show. If Patrick has the time to update a blogger every so often, then I’d enjoy reading it.
