Your morning tech news sir...From the Great White North… the tech news of the day.

The first auto race took place on this day in 1895. The Main Street Electrical Parade debuted at Walt Disney World in 1977. ET was released in 1982. MS-DOS 5.0 was released in 1991.

  1. The FBI made arrests in several countries in connection with the theft of the source code for Half-Life 2 thanks to tips from unhappy gamers. Half-Life developers had to delay the game and re-code part of it when the stolen source code was released on the Internet. The eagerly awaited sequel to the 1998 hit is expected later this summer.
  2. Microsoft has filed lawsuits against eight spammers accusing them of misleading consumers. The company now has over 80 pending suits against junk emailers.
  3. Zombie PCs infected by various spam viruses were used to send out anti-immigrant polemics in German to computers all over the world Thursday. Experts believe that political activists used spammers to send out the emails.
  4. Comcast, whose broadband subscribers unknowingly send out hundreds of million spam messages a day via zombie PCs, has finally decided to selectively block port 25 – the outgoing email port – in an effort to control the traffic. The port is only being blocked on machines that are suspected of sending out spam.
  5. British advertising watchdogs have upheld a complaint against Apple for their G5 ads. The Advertising Standards Authority took issue with ads claiming that the G5 was the “world’s fastest personal computer.” Noting that the G5 was not the fastest computer “in all circumstances for all applications” the ASA will require Apple drop the language from future advertising. The ASA did uphold two other Apple claims that the G5 was the world’s first 64-bit personal computer and that it could support more memory than any PC.
  6. According to Slashdot, McDonald’s Germany will begin using SuSE Linux in all its stores.
  7. The remaining Beatles are finally considering putting their music online.

Tune in tomorrow at 7:40a Eastern for my weekly visit with John Donabie on 1010 CFRB Toronto. And, of course, every Saturday and Sunday, noon to 3p Pacific on KFI 640 AM, Los Angeles.

HL2 – Nail ‘em to the wall!

  2. Anonymous on June 11th, 2004 1:34 pm

As much as I hate to say it, I’m glad to see that someone is willing to block the email port of people who don’t realize what their PC is doing. I would hope that Comcast would then pick up the phone and call them to let them know their being blocked!

    Totally confused Leo.

Please tell if it is ok to go to G4tech tv to subscribe to techtv and screen savers newsletters. I have subscribed to them for years and love your comments and all the other good info. Have helped me a lot. But have read a lot about all the confusion and don,t know if I will be opening a can of worms by letting G4 send me newsletters now, I have deleted all the Tech tv and ScreenSaver cookies and all info on my PC so that I will not get bombarded like a week or so ago.

Will you– or do you have a newsletter like the above mentioned ones now or coming up?

I read you are in Canada for G4. I thought you were done with G4. I really love your show and you newsletters. please advise me as I want to keep getting them.

You may want to note in the Beatles tidbit, that registration is required to follow the link.

I loved the Main Street Electrical Parade….. one of the many highlights of my trip to Disneyland… It was a shame they got rid of it. Probably too cost intensive with all the little bulbs that eventually had to be replaced.

Also, Comcast is one of the worst ISPs EVER. They did NOTHING about the slowdown they were experiencing and now they are one of the worst network owners ever (G4)

    Hey Leo!

Since you’re in Toronto now, you … like… realize that there’s no snow there this time of the year? :) I suppose the “Great Green North” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Although, in TO it’s more like the “Great Grey North” depending on the smog level.

Leo!!!, What are your fans in the United States supposed to do! I loved your show Call For Help with you hosting it it was the BEST show on TechTV and now with the merger and very little Leo I am Sad. How can we get your Canadian show on the US G4TechTV channel? Can we start a petition, is it even possible? We the Fans demand our LEO back!! Please respond with what I can do to help.

    Hmmm… spam…Comcast…G4…Something smells funny.

Mike K brings up a good point Leo. You’re going to spending a week at the time in Toronto, in winter. I know you lived on the East Coast long ago, but that Sonoma Valley weather has spoiled you. ;)

  12. Anonymous on June 12th, 2004 8:59 pm

I signed onto G4TechTV to complain about the changes and my spam increased from about 200 a day to over 1000 per day. Is this retribution because I don’t like the changes? We miss you Leo… hope you start your own channel.

  13. Anonymous on June 12th, 2004 11:11 pm

I’m very happy to hear that you will be brocasted on CFRB on Saturday mornings! I think I’ll actually wake up at such a horrid time in the morning for a teenager just to hear it! Best of luck with your work here in Toronto!

  14. Anonymous on June 13th, 2004 2:02 am

I still won’t get to see him on tv. I don’t even get G4TechTV anymore. I live in NYC and I have “DTV from Time Warner Cable” I had G4TechTV for like a week then it was taken off, I can’t see The Screen Savers. I’m starting to feel dumber and dumber by the day. Anyone out there know how I can get to see this guy on TV again?

  15. Anonymous on June 13th, 2004 4:01 am

Hey leo, just like to say good luck, and hope your plans up here in good old canada pulls through with spectacular results, eh.

By Leo: “Half-Life developers had to delay the game and re-code part of it when the stolen source code was released on the Internet.”

First, I would like to know why they had to recode because of stolen source. If you ask me, they just wanted an excuse to delay Half Life 2. They were supposed to be going gold in like two more weeks at the time and it is certainly clear now that they were NOT ready as they claimed they would be.

By Jshue: “Also, Comcast is one of the worst ISPs EVER. They did NOTHING about the slowdown they were experiencing and now they are one of the worst network owners ever (G4)”

I’m getting tired of people slamming Comcast over this G4 deal. G4 produces the show. Comcast just owns it, but more than likely has very little to do with the day to day wranglings. As for their ISP, I’m on Comcast now and LOVE it. I just got bumped up to 3000Kbps a few months back for FREE. Yes, 3000Kbps. I haven’t had a complaint about them for about a year now. It was a little rough when they took over ATT, but it’s smooth as silk now…

” I’ll keep doing it if I have to fly to Sandusky twice a week.” (Leo on keeping CFH going)- but… Toronto?? Seriously, I hope this goes really well- I still can’t believe G4 would drop it.

  18. Anonymous on June 14th, 2004 1:54 am

I guess the G4 is a done deal, precluding another network. Directv just added RFD, which is aimed mainly at agricultural community (I didn’t want to say the honest hard working farmer term). They have quite a bit of general public interest, and today the agricultural people do use computers for everything from checking weather, selling livestock, and operational applications. It would seem a “Call for Help” type program would fit their criteria nicely. :)

    Fellow Leovillagers,

I can not allow the site which I love to be corrupt any longer. The story of my departure from this very site is one that you must hear. Some have said that I was rude to certain groups of people; I assure you this is not true. I was betrayed by my own companions. I have collected proof that I hope will convince you that I am innocent. It is shown below this paragraph with explanations of its significance to the issues at hand.

This (http://www.geocities.com/nickirelan/ScreenCap.JPG), screen cap shows my account was used after I was banned. I am sure that none of you have ever seen me us the private feature. This alone is proof that you have been misled. I did nothing wrong or out of the ordinary while at Leoville. It is time that those who did this are held accountable. Only you can make that happen. If you know who did this please turn them in.

Andy, I once thought you were a fine member of this community, but you have proven to be a traitor. This (http://www.geocities.com/nickirelan/untitled.bmp), screen cap shows Andy claiming that I harassed people and am continuing to do so. I never engaged in those activities. If any of you have proof that I did these things please post it. Andy’s lack of support for those statements suggests that I have been framed.

As far as my posts, I never wrote anything that is more extreme than the other views that have been posted here. That is not my assessment. It is the opinion of other Leovillagers. Even recent posts say that I did not do anything “bad”. Would I be able to post two articles on Slashdot.com if I said bad things? No, I would not. My acceptance at other major tech communities should make you ask yourself whether I was banned or my ideas were banned. If this community does not want diversity, I will leave. However, if I am forced to leave the true and unjust nature of this website will be seen by all.

    Thank You for Your Time,

    Nicholas Irelan

    Regarding HL2:

They had to change the code so cheaters couldn’t have a head start on any multiplayer aspect.

Changing the code a bit probably has other benefits for players as well as the company.

    Regarding the show:

I just found out about it just looking to download TechTV shows since I don’t own a TV. It’s a shame. I found the old ZDTV back in 2001/2002. Kate and Leo…Call for Help, Screensavers..what ever the show for games was called then, if not the same as it is now…ahh those were the days.

Maybe I can pick up those radio stations on the net since no radio here either (sniff…need $$).

I used to live in Oxnard, CA and could get KFI 640. I don’t know about yucky hot Fresno.

    Have fun Leo.

  26. Anonymous on June 18th, 2004 6:01 am

I could go for a video collection on DVD or VHS of Screensavers and Call For Help. Leo,put those out of work on this project! You will all be rich.

  27. Anonymous on June 19th, 2004 5:12 am

I’m glad that they are selling linux suse linux in german mcdonalds. I wished they did it here but no one will want it. The KFI radio stream wont work with linux. It says its linux compatible but it isnt. Has anyone tried to stream kfi with linux and (or) know the stream address.

Well, I sure miss you and Call For Help. And all of the real Techtv. I see that you might be doing a show from Canada simuliar to CFH. Keep me informed will you please. G4 sucks big. Does anyone know where to find all the old show notes, archives, or anything else from “Call For Help”. It seems that G4 dumped everything from the real techtv shows. I don’t even bother watching the channel anymore. The Screen Savers might as well be cancelled too. As I said before G4 sucks.

  29. Anonymous on June 25th, 2004 6:06 pm

Leo, we used to pick Techtv up via C band satellite, then Comcast stepped in and mpeged you guys so we could no longer watch free, now your gone, sounds like a conspiracy somewhere along the line. You and your fellows made Techtv so i am wondering if you will be in a position to restart a similar channel again, you would have many faithful followers, an instant audiance, surley someone is willing to back that, please keep us informed of any developments

    faithful follower
