San Francisco Here I Come

Posted By dane On June 13, 2003 @ 9:51 pm In Blog | No Comments

On the road againIt’s vacation time. The kids’ last day of school is today and Sunday we’re flying to San Francisco, just north of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico for a week at Costa Azul [1]. We haven’t been there before but we know two families that have and they say it’s great. A little rustic, but great.

Rustic is fine by me. As long as it’s not touristy. Henry and I will be taking surfing lessons. Jennifer and Abby plan to go on a hike through the rain forest. We’ll all be spending a lot of time at the beach. I don’t think I’ll be able to get online while I’m there, but I am bringing a laptop. That’s because right after I get back Patrick and I will be flying to Washington D.C. to speak with the US Secret Service electronic crimes task force, ECSAP [2] on Monday, June 23. I’ve been downloading material on Microsoft’s Palladium and Intel’s Trusted Computing Platform and I’ll be using Keynote on my old G3 Powerbook to create a presentation for the Secret Service. TSS meets The SS.

I had to send back the Nikon D100, but I’ve got an Olympus E-20N [3] and 512 MB of compact flash I’ll be bringing with me to Mexico. It’s a high-end prosumer camera, no interchangable lenses, but the CCD is five megapixels and the built-in optics are quite nice – f2-2.4, 35-140mm – so the pictures look great. I’ll post some when I get back on the 24th.

Meanwhile Brett Larson will fill in for me on Call for Help. Kevin Rose and Jessica Corbin will co-host on The Screen Savers with Patrick. See you on Tuesday, June 24!

Have an awesome time Leo! Leaving SF to visit SF, TSS meeting TSS, being a six megapixel camera, nice optics, and being a six megapixel camera, wierd world eh? Have fun with the camera! CFH and TSS won’t be the same without ya. BTW, don’t be afraid to drink, we need good pictures for the 2004 book :-)

P.S. According to the site, the E-20N is a five megapixel camera… still good enough for me :-)

My last day of school was last Friday, the 6th. All the same, it’s a great feeling when schools over.

Have fun on vacation, and try not to get hurt. We’ll all miss you!

Wife and I have been to the Four Seasons at Punta Mita near there and it was great (we live in Mexico City). I suggest you rent a car though if you plan on doing much sight-seeing or shopping outside your hotel. A taxi ride into Puerto Vallarta, for example, will cost you close to what a rental will cost you for a day. There is a place half-way between where you will be and Puerta Vallarta that lets you swim with dolphins. Its a little pricey but a lot of fun if you’ve never done that before. Great for some terrific family pics, too.

Expect heat and humidity and take some good bug repellent if you plan on hiking through the jungle. There are some places where mosquitos will eat you alive.

Buen viaje!

Have a great vacation. Good luck on the presentation.

I thought it was a typo. You are flying to San Francisco from San Francisco.

Watch your sunshine absorption factor. You won’t feel it until it’s too late and every move of your body is racked with excruciating pain. There are advantages to being a geek, such as wrinkle-free skin. A friendly safety reminder from someone who won’t have the opportunity and is extremely jealous. :-)

There are rumors flying around (what else is new) about new 15 inch PowerBooks based on the PPC 970. True or false, I’d refrain from buying a new Apple laptop for at least a few more weeks.

I don’t what what you’ll be teaching the SS, but I’m sure it will be good.

Have a great time on vacation. Don’t drink the water, or is it don’t eat the worm, or… WhatEver!

Sharks anyone? Have fun!

#11 Comment By Anonymous On June 14, 2003 @ 12:56 am

pop told me that *i’m* the reason we’re not on vacation right now. i guess having doctor appointments once or twice a week hinders the distance one can travel during summer. hmm… i think i’ll be bitter about that from now on in!

unrelated note: in case you were ever curious, wacom pens don’t, apparently, survive being bounced off of tile floors. somebody either needs to klutz-proof me or take me away from the technology. …which seems like yet another good reason to go on vacation. :D

haffa fun, leo!

You better be very good to your wife after that offer you made on TSS to shield Jessica’s thighs from laptop heat with your body. You caused me to spill soda when I heard that. A couple of years ago I was innocently flirting with a similar creature when she turn and said,

“I don’t mind middle-aged men, I don’t even mind dirty middle-aged men, but I do hate dreamers.”

Leo and family,

Have a wonderful time. I’ve been there (and to Peurto Vallarta, too) and it is truly rustic. And wonderful. We took a local bus filled with people carrying chickens (live ones, thank you) and enjoyed every minute of it. Spent time on the beach… felt *very* relaxed when I returned home.

I will be moving whilst you are vacationing. Wanna trade?? ;)

Have a great time Leo! Sounds like when you return you’ll either be as red as a lobster, or tan like a non-Geek! ;) Be sure and have someone take some pictures of you on the surfboard! That would make a great photoshop opportunity! Leo surfing his laptop in Mexico! ;)

#24 Comment By Anonymous On June 14, 2003 @ 4:40 pm

Leo,

I was just down there with my kids in April – you have to go to Sayulita which is very nearby. Nice beach with glittery gold speckles in the sand, great food (Don Pablos? Don something) and a great, laid-back atmosphere.

So dose Sarah really not want to host TSS or has she not been deemed worthy yet?

BTW have a great vacation Leo.

#34 Comment By Anonymous On June 16, 2003 @ 2:35 am

I guess we really are clueless as far as what your jobs are actually like. All we see is your hour of air time. But in that hour you take our minds off our petty problems and make us believe in shangrila. It’s our own little utopia crammed into our tv set five nights a week. Kind of makes up for watching the news for those of us that bothered. Have a great vacation!

#35 Comment By Anonymous On June 16, 2003 @ 3:42 am

Have fun. Please don’t try to pet the big fish with the sharp pointy teeth. Trust me I tried and I’m having to type this with only one hand:)

Movable Type seems to require something on the server. Have you heard of a package (FREE of course) that lets you maintain content in a Windows environment and then export to html pages that are ftp’d to the server?

#40 Comment By Anonymous On June 16, 2003 @ 11:02 pm

I know your already there and having fun. Its gunna be funny seing you back on TSS red as a lobster! Hope you have fun surfing.

hey Mr.Leo. I’m your fan from the UNited Arab Emirates. I saw you get excited when you received a call from the Antartic. I thought I’d surprise you that I’m from here :) Love the show (Call for help & The Screen Savers)

big hi’s to Cat and Brett.

#50 Comment By Anonymous On June 23, 2003 @ 4:16 am

With all the stuff going on at Tech TV I’d be nervous to be on vacation right now. Come back and find out they liked Brett so much that they canned ya! We can all only hope and pray that nothing like that ever happens, as Brett (god bless his little heart) is lost in front of a pc, and doesn’t seem to know enough to host the most basic PC help shows, CFH.

Personally I prefered Leo and Patrick together, TSS has lost the ‘leo being a geek and patrick making fun of him in a subtle manner’ magic. I hope TechTV didn’t can Chris over his on air performance / image. That would have been a huge mistake.

It didn’t take me long to get over Chris’ gnomeness. I guess most of the audience is too quick to judge, (or at least the network execs are.) My my how TechTV has come a long way since the days of ZD…now they think they’re CNN. This direction will be the death of that netowrk and someone will have to revive the small, grass roots, rough around the edges ZD that charmed us all in the first place.

Now that the new powerbooks didn’t come out, are you still going to get one or wait longer??

#52 Comment By Anonymous On June 25, 2003 @ 12:28 am

I’m almost certain I don’t believe in ESP. Yet throughout life there’ve been weird incidences that make me wonder. This morning I saw a guy come out of the office next to me. I’d never been there but the first thing I thought was that he had a motorhome. Less than a minute later he opened a warehouse door to the most expensive one I’ve seen. Is it possible our thoughts are not completely linear in time? Never more than a few seconds to under a minute so no luck with the lottery unfortunately.

It’s good to see you back on the show. Now go out and buy a Mac so we can inherit the savings. A no brainer prediction.

#53 Comment By Anonymous On June 29, 2003 @ 9:18 pm

Is it just me….or are you always taking vacations?

Oh…no sorry. You’re always taking days off…not vacations.

my appologies. you priveledged bastard.

But do have fun…post jpegs and animated gifs.
