It looks like a Black and Yellow Argiope.

We have them here in central Illinois too. That is a small to medium sized one. The barn where we work on our solar car is home to a few of them.

I’ve seen several of these in my garden. They’re harmless and very beneficial – eat a LOT of bugs. They have a neat web which has a zig-zag pattern woven in just above the middle. At intervals they eat the web and start over fresh.

We always called these “Writing Spiders” prob. because of the zigzag patterns that they weave in to their webs. They always seemed to be not very aggressive as spiders go. Around here, (Indiana) you only see them in late summer (small) and early fall (big).
