The Stars of ZDTV

Posted By On July 6, 2003 @ 4:36 pm In Blog | No Comments

Sumi Das’s last day was Thursday. She’s heading to a reporting job at MSNBC. That leaves Adam Sessler and me as the last original show hosts from the very first days of ZDTV. (Michaela joined the channel after only a month or so due to visa difficulties.) I’m beginning to feel like Kurt Loder. Hey it could be worse, I could be Mark Goodman. (How many of the original MTV VJs can you name [1]?).

The good news is that everyone who has left the channel has moved on to bigger and better things. Here are the original, and now dearly departed, hosts of ZDTV on May 11, 1998 as best as I can remember.

  • Jim Louderback and Sumi Das, Fresh Gear
  • Lauren Fielder, Gamespot TV
  • Scott Herriott, Ed Marques (The Surf Guru) and SuChin Pak, Internet Tonight
  • Carmine Gallo, Money Machine
  • Kate Botello, The Screen Savers and Tilde
  • John C. Dvorak, Silicon Spin
  • Victoria Recaño, ZDTV News

Am I missing anybody?

There were hundreds of other people behind the scenes, of course, many of whom have also left. About a dozen or so of us old timers are still around, although no one has been around as long as I have.

Today begins my 10th year with ZDTV/TechTV. That’s the longest I’ve ever worked for anybody. I helped hire many of the people who started the channel. All of them are gone but I’m still standing. I can’t figure out if I’m a survivor or just too lazy to move on. I guess Adam and I will just have to head out and raise a glass to the original stars of ZDTV.

I know Jazy and I completely agree with you. ZDTV was da bomb! Wish ZD would buy it out and revamp it. If I had the cash i know I would. I hope you stay but if you leave I would completely understand. Know that we are behind you in everything you do and if we can do anything to help just let us know.

I started watching zdtv in 99. The good old days.

I never knew that kate was Tilda.

So whats kate up to now.

  3. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 5:17 pm

Those were good days. What is going to happen to Fresh Gear? I love that show.

  4. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 5:20 pm

I came across ZDTV on it’s initial days on 98 over by my C-Band satellite. I have to say that those were the true days of the rise of technology and information – nowadays it’s just games and more games which makes you stop and think for a moment where is our society standing and how much do they actually care about innovation. There are a lot of us still looking foward to new innovation and technology – yet others just stick around playing games all day and actually not producing much with it. I only wish that people realize the full potential of technology (as they did on 98 – I’m guessing that THAT was the main reason for ZDTV) and that the new generation return to make productive things over technology.

I am worried though about this website (www.leoville.com) where in the WHOIS it states the TechTV address and mailing, if Leo decides to leave (and we would perfectly understand) and change jobs, would this website be closed or would Leo move it to it’s next job or personal address? If he leaves and let’s say go to radio (which I’ve seen is another shot at technology) would this website close or would we still hear from Leo?

  5. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 5:36 pm

I have been watching ever since we got a satellite dish in 99. I think I began watching back when ZDTV had only been on the air for 3 or 4 months before I stumbled upon it. Now it is like my bible.

I have enjoyed some of the changes and been upset over some of the changes as well.

  6. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 5:59 pm

Well, I have not been watching that long. And I’m sure the ZDTV was great. Wish I’d seen it.

I will miss Sumi, too. It is sad when people move on, especially as a viewer. As a co-worker, you still have the chance to hook up, but the workplace is not the same.. I hope you don’t go Leo, but I agree with the other posting people. As to understanding completely. Wow, 10 years…

    Congratulations, Leo!!

May your life continue to have success, peace and happiness.

I’ll still buy your books, no matter what you do. :)

  7. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 6:42 pm

Leo you are the only thing that is still holding TTV together. If you jumped ship, which I am shocked you haven’t yet, and moved onto bigger and better things I bet they wouldn’t last a month. From the actions and programming decisions by the PTB, it is clear that no one is in control or has an idea what to do with TTV.

  8. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 7:47 pm

Man, I remember back in the day when TechLive was on during the day, they had the ticker at the bottom and the stock quotes on the sidebar. Alas, I only back far enough to when Jessica was “jcorbin@techtv.com”, and Leo rallied (?) to get her “jessica@techtv.com”. I think I can even remember the original TSS set, the current one being the 3rd design (2nd re-design).

  9. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 7:52 pm

Did Solodad O’Brien ever actually do TechTV or was she only on ZDTV?

Apparently TechTV is like the “Home Shopping Network” of on-air talent for MSNBC!

Hang in there Leo – if the Caller ID says MSNBC – DON’T ANSWER THE PHONE!!

  10. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 7:55 pm

I know who is in control chahn. The same unimaginative suits who controls the rest of the entertainment industry. You can’t take a chance on anything new, just the same old formulas. For a few years the channel was fresh, now it’s just Milton Berle in drag and T&A. Allen’s pockets wouldn’t need to be as deep if the network had kept to it’s vision. Maybe we should have a contest as to what TTV should be changed to, you know like TNN. If I offended anyone that determines programming for TechTV I’m extremely happy.

  11. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 7:56 pm

Ten years — that’s almost an eternity in broadcasting. I hope congratulations are in order. I guess the question for you, Leo, is whether you have somewhere better to go at the moment. I’ve been at my job for eleven years this week, and sometimes I wonder if I’ve overstayed my welcome and missed out on other opportunities because I’m “comfortable”. I’ve always thought that you should start your own production company. I think you have great vision and hope that someday you can bring it to fruition.

  12. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 8:25 pm

Congratulation for the 10 years in ZDTV/Tech TV broadcasting business. You help launch the one of the greatest network on television. You really prove to TPTB that there is an audience out there for Intelligent programming for us geeks of the world.

Unfortunately as Tech TV TPTB continues to chip away quality tech shows, in favor of Entertainment Fluff filler. At this rate TTV will like another network on the vube tube that lost it orginality, and be like TNN, TLC, USA Network, Discovery Network.

Leo hang in there, Once the Next Tech boom comes around in 2005. Tech TV is still around, will be in the position will the Premier Network for Technology and Tech News! not fluff.

  13. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 8:53 pm

    hang in there Leo.

Hey leo, di you go to gaminclick? Or was that an imposter????

  16. Anonymous on July 6th, 2003 11:46 pm

You forgot Pam Krueger(sp?) from “The Money Machine”. What about the guy from “Computer Shopper”? (I’ve forgotten his name.)

I’ve been watching the channel since it was a month old. I certainly miss those good ol’ days!

  17. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 12:07 am

I don’t think Pam was on The Money Machine at the beginning, was she?

I left out the hosts of the advertorial – they were not really a part of the channel.

Never heard of gaminclick. I’m am often imitated… but never equalled.

  18. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 12:17 am

I knew that Kate was Tilde (after some thought), but who played Dash??

I think I started watching back in June or July of 98 on summer vacation from high school. I sure do miss the good ol’ days in the basement. Anyhow…thanks for 5 years of great information and fun!!

  19. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 12:40 am

Is this the beginning of the end?

  20. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 1:00 am

I hope this isnt the beginning of theend.

  21. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 3:32 am

I’ll tell you who is in control. Uncle Paul. Unfortunately it’s all business. I’m here in Seattle. I’ve been watching the news. He’s laid off 300+ over @ Vulcan…I am/was a Charter customer. He sold the Charter system I was on to some no name provider. I am sure he lost $BB in VC and stock with the post 9/11 tech bubble burst. His main focus seems to be a new real estate deal in Seattle and trying to save his sport holdings (Seahawks and Trail Blazers) and the EMP. I have no inside knowledge of TTV but with all the departures, lay offs, and wacky/STUPID new shows I am guessing the following is happening. It’s a climate of fear and uncertainty there. Better to seek out steady employment than wait for the axe to fall, or the company to go belly up.

  22. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 3:48 am

I have been a loyal ZDTV and TechTV viewer since the very beginning. I remember the early days of The ScreenSavers with the lovely young lady from Austrailia. I received a ScreenSavers toolkit, autographed pictures, a Silicon Spin mug with an autograph card from Mr. Dvorak, and a few other items. The programming has always been informative and I have grown attached to the hosts who have graced the different programs. Without this connection to TechTV, I would have never bought half of the computer equipment I now have.

BTW – Las Vegas was the first city Leo and Kate came to when they first decided to visit the different cities that aired ZDTV and TechTV.

Leo, I am raising my champagne glass to you and your cohorts. Stay as long as you have fun doing what you are doing…. I hope that’s a long time. If not, it’s been one helluva ride!!!!

Also been a viewer since the zd days. Short and to the point Leo…when you go, I go.

  26. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:23 am

I love Tech TV, i miss Chris from CFH. There has been a “lot” of new screensavers coming in since the start of summer…always liked fresh gear and the Sessler (still miss extended play..but X-play suffices…but could it please do without the announcer guy…)

Keep up the good work thanks for showing us practical ways opposed to difficult more traditional ones.

  27. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:31 am

“nowadays it’s just games and more games which makes you stop and think for a moment where is our society standing and how much do they actually care about innovation”- unfortunately, that’s because the dot.com boom is over, and most people have lost interest in technology.

Corporations are hiring cheap tech. labor outside the country in place of hiring tech. pro’s here in the States, as well.

  28. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:35 am

I have been a big fan of ZDTV/TechTv for many years now. I started watching in 98 as well. I really miss the old days. I’m not sure but wasn’t there a show called PageVeiw. I believe it was a show about Computer books. I don’t remember the name of the host.

Thanks for all the great Computer help and memories over the years.

    Keep The Faith, Leo

  29. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:50 am

Congrats on 10 yrs! That is certainly something to be happy about even if you don’t care for the status of TechTV. I’m still sticking around, but if they don’t the edgy non tech shows I won’t be around for much longer. And I’d also like to toast to all the stars of ZDTV! Here here!

  30. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 5:12 am

I can’t imagine a reason to stick with ZDTV if you were to leave. I know it’s called TTV now, but it still sounds too cliche’ for me… and that’s the direction they’ve apparently chosen to take. Without your presence there, I can’t see a lot of positive things going on there.

Hang in there though – until you get the chance to find a better gig!

    I’m gonna miss Sumi Das

  34. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 7:16 am

Another down and two more to go as far as “name talent” at TTV. That leaves you and Patrick as the last adults with a name that has earned respect on this pathetic attempt of a network. Whereever you go make sure to take Patrick along. Kind of a trailing spouse deal.

I stopped wathing even Screen Savers because they’ve so diluted the network.

I don’t even have the desire to make fun of them on my sire anymore. Kinda like kicking a dead dog.

Funny thing is that my site is a top entry on google for a bunch of their shows and “Sumi Das Naked”

    Go figure.

  35. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 9:01 am

Dont give up leo i just started watching techtv about ohh 1 year ago and i have learned so much from you if you know who will be replacing sumi? I know my grammar sucks. But stay with techtv at least till i am your age :) i learn a lot from you and pat ihn a way even though i am 17 you made me think he i could go into computers, or politics so you hold a very important step in my life leo whenever you go i know i will be sad but you pat Tss and cfh has got me very computer smart and i say thank you for teaching me that stuff i think we all learn from you and hey if i go into politics you may get a call from me i might be the nerdiest prez. But Leo if you read it honestly i have learned a lot and will continue to do so. Keep TTV strong as long as ya can though thank you leo

  36. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 10:37 am

We have been with you Leo from the beginning via our C-Band satellite. Just got DSL!! Wouldn’t have gotten a computer, let alone broadband if it hadn’t been for you. Thanks for trip down memory lane. Glad you are back CFH and are answering questions without cutting off the caller. That part has made a huge difference. Thanks

FYI: Soledad is now on CNN as Co-Host on “American Morning”!

  37. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 11:52 am

    Hey Leo,

U miss spelled Carmine Gallo on ur list of “original stars”. I know he was just a animated character but what about Tilde’s friend; Dash. Well even though the good old days of ZDTV is gone but will never be forgotten, The NEWer TechTV is excellent too even though most people can’t see it because they want the original ZDTV back. The world is always changing and TechTV shows that very well: New Things…Turn Us On! oh something I miss and I bet many others do also is the Avatar based ZDTV chatroom, it should be brought back one day in some form! Leo u are doing a great job, if it wasn’t for u and Jim Louderback and John C Dvorak ZDTV/TechTV wouldnt be here today, u should remember that!!!

  38. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 12:04 pm

Leo 10 years? I thought ZDTV was on the air May of 1998. What did you do for the 5 years prior to 1998?

  39. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 1:43 pm

    Leo,

You are certainly the only real reason to watch TechTV. It’s not that the other shows are not good (although robot wars is awful and almost an experiment in nostalgia), it’s just you anchor the network. The other programming changes have been horrible and the single nightly run of Screensavers is foolish.

No surprise Sumi is leaving, although she will be missed.

As for being too lazy to move on…sometimes freedom is of far greater value than more money/fame. It appears, and I hope I’m right, that you have pretty flexible arrangement which allows for outside stuff and plenty of time with your family.

Often, that more than makes up for the nonsense that goes with any job.

Congrats on 10 years. Hope whatever the next decade holds for you is equally rewarding and exciting.

    G

  40. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 1:57 pm

I have been watching since kate was still on extended play. She was only on for about 4 months (from when i started watching) before she left. I never saw her on TSS so Patrick and Leo together are completely natural. I don’t mind chris leary either but sumi was a sexy vixen goddess. I hope they replace her with someone just as talented as she was.

  41. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 2:43 pm

    Leo,

Your the best that ZDTV and Tech TV ever had. When you leave we will probally only have Adam left and i don’t suppose that he will be there much longer.Leo,i’m just letting u know that you have thousands of poeple who support you and were backing u all the way.

P.S. Tell Mogan that she is really preety.

  42. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 3:17 pm

    What about Erica Hill?

  43. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:19 pm

I was also to shock to see sumi leave TechTv

but we can still catch her on MSNBC its funny

though on my DirecTV Tech TV and MSNBC our side

by side. But in all its sitll good too see that

Leo and Adam Sessler has not left the network

them two our the only reasons why I have enjoyed

TechTV for the pass four years…….

  44. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 4:28 pm

Hey Leo Congrats on 10 years!!!

    Have a Good One!!!!

    Tom

  45. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 5:22 pm

I’ve been visiting this site for quite a while, and I’ve never seen a poster that was happy with the direction TTV was heading. You would think just one person would be happy. Maybe the happy ones don’t post or complain. Or, maybe no one’s happy. Years ago it had a family feel. No offense Leo, but today it’s almost embarrassing.

  46. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 5:42 pm

Congratulations, Leo! I just started watching TechTV about a year and a half ago, and from what I’ve read, I wish I could’ve watched you guys in the early days. You are really the only reason I watch TechTV. Stay as long as you can.

  47. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 6:36 pm

I have been watching zdtv since day one and ever single day after that. I remember when everything that aired on the network was done in house. Now you look at most things and you see the bravo and BBC logos. I think Steve Jobs should buy Techtv and take it backs to it’s roots everthing in house the way it should be.

  48. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 9:16 pm

Just about the only show on TechTV I watch these days is The Screen Savers and I enjoy it MUCH more when you are there, Leo! You are interesting, a good interviewer, and unbiased whether it’s concerning an individual, an operating system, or a company.

They should rename TechTV to GamerTV since that seems to be the number one priority these days at TechTV. I love technology but could care less about gaming. I want to hear about new technology and the technology-related market. I miss The Money Machine and other shows that dealt with these topics. One-by-one, the few shows that I’ve really enjoyed have been replaced by useless entertainment or entertainment-related junk.

If you ever move on, Leo, I’ll be a “switcher”.

  49. Anonymous on July 7th, 2003 10:06 pm

That stinks. I didn’t even know that Sumi was leaving. You’d think TechTV would get the hint by now and start doing stuff that the VIEWERS like. I really miss the old TSS and I miss Internet Tonight…loved it.

  50. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 2:38 am

I have been a viewer of ZDTV since 98′. Leo was the original Call for Help guru and The Screen Savers was only a 30 minute show. I have seen the show transform over the past few years and some changes were good, others I didn’t like but I always watch. ZDTV, TechTV…same to me. But I do miss the old days!

Leo, if you ever do leave TechTV it will NEVER be the same!!! But you have so many fans, and you always will!

    “AMAZING” ; )

  51. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 2:59 am

Meghan Marx was the bomb on IT.

  52. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:20 am

    Glad you stuck around!

  53. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:44 am

God I miss the old ZDTV days. When it was a TECH channel and not a channel based on old BBC crapola. My question to everyone is if you had to point out point where Techtv JUMPED THE SHARK what would it be?

    One word Thunderbirds! JMHO

Leo keep up the good fight. Your two shows are the only thing worth watching! Call for help is just great and the Screen Savers is even better!

  54. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:48 am

On a high note I subscribe to Adelphia digital cable. They have the channel logos at the bottom left of the screen and for TTV they still have the ZDTV logo. Sometimes I dream it was four years ago.

  55. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 5:05 am

    Hey,

What is up with all the BBC bashing. The BBC puts out some really great content. Can we say “Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.” The reason the BBC stuff Techtv has is bad is becasue they are showing canclled shows. I called some friends of mine at BBC they said they laughed there pants off when I told them techtv had bought those shows from them. Everthing was good when everthing was done in house at techtv. One person asked where techtv went wrong. The day Vulcan Ventures purchased it and started makeing changes.

I have only been a viewer since 1999. We didn’t get DirecTV until 1999 so before that i didn’t know about techtv. I also remembeer when techlive was on almost the whole day. (the last time i saw that was Jan 15 2001 when techtv aired the apple keynote) When TSS replayed at 10 pm and when internet tonight was on before TSS. I am not too mush of a fan of the new shows. Robot wars, anime unleashed, unscrewed, future fighting machines, spy school. all of these shows were not part of “the good ol’ days”. I also miss erica hill on techlive. and now sumi das is leaving i am wondering if techtv will die soon. Is this the beginning of the end or just the bump in the road that techtv needs. I want to know who is taking over fresh gear. I noticed some of the Fresh Gear commercials showed Sumi reviewing products for fresh gear episodes not shown yet.(remember the PSX special review?) So there must still be some sumi episodes left. I really do miss the old version of techtv. I have started a yahoo group called techtv_fans to talk about techtv. there is a message on it to discuss this topic.

  58. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:30 pm

Promise me that you’ll never leave, Leo. Life would be a big empty void without seeing you fooling around on TV every night.

On a related note, I had the chance to meet Adam in Indianapolis last year. He actually does the wild “hand language” in real life, he’s a gem.

  59. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:33 pm

I guess we are all worried about Tech TV after hearing a few news stories and the gossip going on here and other places. Hopefully we are all unjustly worried??? I guess we’ve seen to many good shows go away while the useless trash seems to survive. Leo, you guys have always done a good job and continue to do so. I do wonder about a few of the other shows on Tech TV but if we have to put up with them to keep you around so be it!

Keep up the good work, it’s very much appreciated!

  60. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 4:56 pm

You didnt mention ole Locker Gnome aka Chris Pirillo…oh wait, he hasn’t gone on to bigger and better things, my bad.

  61. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 6:01 pm

    WHY SUMI WHYYY?

  62. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 6:08 pm

chris pirillo was not an original at techtv/zdtv

leo if you go anywhere take pat with you that is a smart guy, tie him to a chain around the back of your car and drag him

I wish kevin and yoshi could get their own show, yoshi would be all about modding and kevin about security/hacking and how to secure youself and to see if you are not secure, like you were talking about to v1ru5 or whatever, yesterday on tss, you siad you guys never have enough time to talk about security and stuff, so i think it would be a great show idea, the decent shows on ttv are Xplay(it goes well with what it is about, it is about games, not how tofix your computer, and it was a original show from zdtv, just different name) Tss(the bit chats are not good most of the time, but the terminator one was pretty decent last week) and Call for Help(great to see leo back, brett’s mac tip is good) three good sows on it, to be honest i have ttv on all the time, my tv is broke, so i watch unscrewed and stuff, the only other show out of them three i like is anime unleashed, gosh iam ranting, later

  63. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 8:44 pm

i ove call for help i watch it all most every day and if i don’t watch it i record it on my pvr actuli my bf got me hoke line a sinker on it but we wont tell him

  64. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 9:08 pm

You forgot your old buddy Erica Hill who went on to CNN. Gosh I miss her.

  65. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 10:49 pm

I remember about a year ago, Chris Leary was actually on WWE programming, then he left. Amazing he left a company thats going nowhere. (No competition, so no pressure to better the product, they bought out WCW) To a Tech channel thats going in the same direction.

Someone out there with the money and the, pardon my french “BALLS” should create a tech channel to compete with Techtv, give people the shows that they want to see. A little healthy competition doesn’t hurt anybody!! Anyways congrats on the 10 years, and good luck to you whichever road you decide to take.

HINT, HINT: Regis is getting pretty old, ;)

  66. Anonymous on July 8th, 2003 11:52 pm

damn…there’s very little to actually keep me watching this channel now. I used to watch it all the time but now I only occasionally come in to see the screensavers…but even that isn’t what it used to be.

And it sucks because I’ve only had the channel for about 2 years now. It’s like I caught it just before it was on it’s way down.

    erica hill left…now sumi…why sumi…why?

probably because they are paying her more…but..damn. this sucks.

Leo…get out while you still can.

before you are blamed for destroying the network. You know you will be.

  67. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 2:20 am

Reading your latest blog kind of makes me sad. YOu all were such wonderful people in making ZDTV a special and much watched station for the geeks.

I have been watching since it started in May of 98. When the dish started advertising the station I counted the days. Computers had become such a big part of my life.

    Congrats to you and Adam…

And the best of luck to sumi. She will be missed.

  68. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 2:26 am

Leo, congrats on 10 years. That still gives us about 2-3 years left (when you said a while back that you might do radio when your contract runs up). Anyway, i just wanted to rant about what i remember from the good ol days, tss fridge pictures, vmails, the cam film fest, the viewer cam intros before commercials and during, netcam giveaways, chat day, erica hill, dash, tilde, and the cat that did rumors, the cfh fish, erica hill news briefs, the pets.com puppet, the crt tvs, ugm with the $30,000 tv, the stairs, and the lack of syndicated shows. Thats enough for now.

LOL i remember in the old ZDTV avatar chat, when Leo entered the room, people always went on top of his avatar lol. …::sigh:: good times.

    Keep on keepin’ on, Leo.

I know why you keep doing it, it’s fun and it beats working.

    What About the show

    Page View.

    Who hosted that?

It was the show about tech books if memory serves.

  73. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 4:25 am

I think it’s ironic (at least in my mind) that you mentioned the old MTV VJs because I feel that MTV is going through the same problems as TechTV. Both stations seem to be going in a direction away from what made people love them. MTV seems to be going away from the music and more towards reality shows, and TechTV is focusing more on games and shows like the Thunderbirds (which nobody wants to see). I just miss the old days.

  74. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 4:47 am

more on my post above about who is in control (See above) Paul Allen, aka Uncle Paul, just cut the front office staff of his Portland Trail Blazers by 1/3 today. The papers think that could be around 100 people. So TTV is not the only Allen/Vulcan ventures company where the ax is falling.

    Leo,

Your 10 years of contributions — of which I’ve seen about four years’ worth — and the old, informative, tech-savvy format of The Screen Savers has played a critical role in my life both professionally and personally.

I congratulate you on hanging tough through all the changes.

Sadly, I must agree with others who’ve posted on this thread. TSS and TechTV, as a whole, is drifting far away from what makes it such a special oasis on the television landscape.

TechTV and TSS managements have forgotten that smart, savvy shows that roll up their sleeves, work dog-hard and produces honest-to-gosh, quality content will always be superior to any show (or shows) aiming for fluff and a 15-year-old boy’s hormones.

Dig in if you can, Leo. Please let TechTV/TSS management see these posts; not mine so much as the slew of others in here begging for what makes The Screen Savers — and TechTV itself — worth our time.

We who are writing to you, Megan Morrone and others are the ones who choose to buy or not buy from TechTV/TSS sponsors. If Tech TV’s and TSS’ managers — the suits — continue in their current direction, there are many other things we can do with our money and TV viewing habits.

Keep up the great work Leo, regardless of where you land.

Memo to Management: Take a damn good hard look at what you are doing to your product. Get a clue. Now. If you don’t understand the consequences, let me spell it out for you: C-h-a-n-g-e c-h-a-n-n-e-l, t-u-r-n o-f-f T-V, d-o n-o-t s-u-p-p-o-r-t s-p-o-n-s-o-r-s. Capiche?

As a long time viewer of TechTv (back from the ZDTV Days) I think we all need to help out by sticking by our favorite shows through “thick and thin”. We know that ratings drive all networks and unless we want to see it all “go away” we have to keep writing the PTB and letting them know what we think.

I was a VERY loyal Screensavers watcher when it used to re-air at 10:00 PM (EST). Then it went away and so did I….then I got a new job where I am the “Head Geek” (I swear the ad I answered was “Mac Geek Wanted”) and now I am a loyal Screensavers and Call for Help fan (since I can watch the re-airs at noon and the live show at 3:00). Gee, where was this rant going….oh yeah – it has been such a lifesaver and I feel like I am visiting with old friends – and learning some cool new stuff again.

Anyway – maybe we need an all Screensavers network (SSTV ?).

Stick with it Leo – and fans….

I didn’t start watching in the early /ZDTV /days… don’t think it was offered on my cable service… Sumi is talented – that is a loss. I really liked Erica Hill too; a really big gain for CNN.

  79. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 1:06 pm

    Congrats Leo

Love you on Tech Tv When you and Patrick are on Even my Wife watches

  80. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 3:53 pm

I worked with Soledad in Boston!

Keep up the great work Leo. Rumors have it Viacom is interested in buying the network… Interested in being an MTV VeeJay?

Anhow, as for Leoville being registered to a TechTV address, I’m sure it is because Leo would not want people to know his home address.

    Again, congrats on ten years.

  81. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 4:07 pm

i’m also among the viewers of zdtv/techtv who misses the good old days. to me, it is apparent that the management of ttv are indeed shifting the station’s primary function from an information-based network to an entertainment-based network. there are a lot of shows and people that used to work for zdtv/techtv that i miss so much. some of them are jim louderback, sumi das, kate botello, victoria recaño and erica hill. heck i even miss tilde and dash.

it would indeed be a great loss should you leave ttv. however should you decide to do so then, just like the others, i will also respect your decision. i also stand by the suggestion that you take patrick norton with you.

  82. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 5:28 pm

    at least they cancelled thunderbirds.

  83. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 6:08 pm

Funny all these people going to the “news networks” only to be lost in obscurity. I saw Erica Hill on CNN the other day. Think she did a 1 minute segment on fireworks. Yippee! Now instead of working with a couple people are you on air with dozens, and no one remembers who you are. Very few people every go anywhere especially on the second rate channels like MSNBC.

Maybe TechTV will hire some people who actually know anything about Tech. Like what the hell are people like Jessica and Sarah doing on the channel? They are totally clueless.

  84. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 7:13 pm

Actually, Soledad was on MSNBC before she went to NBC and Fox. The Site was a ZD production pre-ZDTV. Am I not correct, Dev? (Leo’s character on the Site)

  85. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 7:22 pm

The amazing thing about ZDTV/TechTV has been the close connection of host to viewer. It has helped to bring the network to where it is today. The accessibility to ask questions, receive answers and provide feedback hasn’t disappeared. Albeit, it’s more difficult to get an answer from a human nowadays because of the immense volume of email and calls received.

In years past when the network was more innocent, I was pleased to receive a few unexpected emails after airing my comments. One was from Becky Worley who was hosting CFH (what a sweetie), Chris Pirillo of CFH (short but to the point), and Jennifer Mack from Silicon Spin (gorgeous gal, what is she doing now??). Anyway, my point is that I haven’t forgotten the kind souls who partook of their precious time to respond.

TechTV is still going through growing pains. It’s now in a radical experimental stage of its evolution. They are trying to find the niche in the niche. I believe they are striving to retain the viewer base they now enjoy, but eventually target the younger and more impressionable viewer – call it the MTV crowd. They are expanding past the mere computer user (of various skills) and related infotainment, into the zone of unadulterated entertainment. More fluff and less meat, in other words. I’ve detected dissension regarding the direction TechTV is heading, due to this new dimension of pure entertainment. As has been mentioned, it is business first and the viewer second. It’s not unexpected for the network to branch out like it has. To not change and air the same programming schedule is stagnation, and would in all probability, quicken its demise. I can only hope the network will figure out how to sustain the veteran viewer with quality infotainment like TSS and CFH, while working to attract new viewers and hold the broadest possible audience it needs to be a viable and profitable enterprise.

While having no direct competitors may worry the executives watching the rating numbers, TechTV deserves honorable recognition for its achievements as a worthy television network. I wish Leo and TechTV many more prosperous years to come.

  86. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 9:11 pm

I heard a rumor. Apple is looking for a high profile tech spokes person. They would do national spots and media tours on the major networks. There’s even talk about a syndicated weekly Mr. Jobs would like use to promote Macs and consumer products, especially the 64bit OS. How far from Cupertino do you live Leo?

  87. Anonymous on July 9th, 2003 9:57 pm

guys, i think we need to hold a cyber ‘silence in honor of ZDTV, and the well being of TechTV…

  88. Anonymous on July 10th, 2003 6:34 am

I’ve been watching ZDTV-TTV since it came on DirecTV. I remember seeing ads with Tilde promoting The Coming of ZDTV and saw the first show on DirecTV and enjoyed it.

Since that time, my local cable company has become digital but does NOT offer TechTV and the only reason I keep DirecTV is for TechTV. If Tech TV maintains its present direction (Puppets, Anime, canceled BBC programs and Martin’s trashy show, “Unscrewed” etc) I’ll drop DirecTV and save a bit of money each month.

I’m not a gamer and I’m very tired of the only shows I watch have become so game oriented. Tech News is interesting but I very much miss the prime time repeat of TSS. I’m glad to see such an attractive person as Sarah rise to the occasion and is actually doing things technical on the air. Jessica? Her place is eye-candy for some one other than me. The new cast is interesting with Yoshi, kevin, Pat and the stable source of the network, Leo, to make each show interesting.

If I never see another review of a graphic’s card, it will be fine with me. How many question a week do you have about those cards?

Tilde, Dash, Silicone Ali, Erica, and so many other that have come and gone but when they go, seldom do they make an impact anywhere else. About the only one I see, maybe for one minute a day, is Erica Hill.

Congratulations to you Leo for the many years you’ve been with TechTV and I enjoy your shows CFH and TSS. BTW, I enjoy Brett’s spots on the network very much. It’s a shame he can’t host a 30 minute show about Macs on a regular basis.

Why not bring back Tilde and Dash just to show the newer viewers of the show what Tilde and Dash were all about? A Reunion Show of all the On the Air personnel of the show would be interesting too. But, that will never happen.

About a section of Where They Are Now? That would top anything like ‘Unscrewed’ for me. (Does the network actually think people watch that show?) I tried and it is terrible with no direction except for an opportunity to make Martin look silly.

  89. Anonymous on July 10th, 2003 3:35 pm

Sadly, my cable company didn’t have the ZDTV. Only in the last year and a half TechTV has been available to me. I wish I could have seen it. Yes people move on and that s sad as well, even more so when they are forced to move on. What I don’t understand is why TechTV didn’t “Tech Out” Megan’s home so she could have stayed on. She could have done most of her segments right from her home. TSS could have made it a cool project just in setting up her home. After all you work for TechTV, why not use Technology to the fullest?

  90. Anonymous on July 10th, 2003 3:57 pm

Yeah, I remember the old days. I was even lucky enough to talk to Leo on Call for Help in the early days. I’ve been watching since ’98 (not from the begining though. I have dish network. I started watching as soon as they added it).

I must admit that the programming was alot more interesting back then (Silicon Spin, Big Thinkers (I hate the new format), money machine, etc.) I remember watching that channel all day back in the old days. Now it seems like they air robot wars 8 times a day along with those other bbc shows.

I’ll be watching TechTV as long as Leo is there. When you leave, I will have no reason to watch Satellite television anymore…

  91. Anonymous on July 10th, 2003 7:30 pm

We’ve got techtv here in Brunei Darussalam for the past 2-3 years, i used to watch TechTV every single day because of Chris Pirillo, but nowadays the only show i watch are The Screen Savers because it’s the only good show thats left.

    Congrats Leo. :)

  92. Anonymous on July 10th, 2003 7:50 pm

I think your great and I watch ya on both shows everyday! I enjoy you and ALL of TechTV. BUT I was wondering what happened to Chris Pirillo on Call For Him! Just curious!

    Great Job Leo!!!!:))

I’m glad you lasted this long. I do miss Kate, one of my fondest memories is you and her dancing at the end of the show. I can’t complain about your new group of babes. It might be fun to have a reunion show. Say hi to…Pat, Cat, Sarah, Kevin, Jessica, Megan, Morgan, Yoshi, Brett and the rest.

When you and/or Patrick leaves will be the worst though…

  98. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 7:18 am

man, leo, i love your shows and please don’t even try to leave TTV..I mean, you’re the Heart and Soul of this network since the ZDTV days..The fact is, I’m from a country like Philippines, and we badly need good and reliable opinions about technology.and thanks to TSS for providing so much of that..

I also like Adam and Morgan, they’re such a cute couple, a video game geek and such a game goddess!

Congrats! Leo for the 10 years of providing us tech infos!!!

  101. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 3:38 pm

    Hi Leo

Thanks for the updates here. Sad to see Sumi leave. There certainly is a lot of talent that has moved on. I too think that a reunion show – or how about this — why not air the original pilots (or an early successful show), and advertise it in advance. That would be really cool.

Thankfully, it looks like someone cut the strings on the Thunderbirds…. (hahaha)

    Chris

  102. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 5:19 pm

I’ve started watching in 1998 at my grandmothers house (because she had satellite). I finally got techtv at my house in 2000. I used to be able to watch techtv all day long..now there are only about 3-4 shows i can stand to watch. I hope they don’t get brett larson to host fresh gear..heh.

  103. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 7:57 pm

everytime I put it on tech tv…ROBOT WARS IS ON

    wtf?

  104. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 9:32 pm

Unscrewed, just sucks. If you want to watch a late night talk show, I’d watch Leno, or Letterman, or Conan, or Jimmy Kimmel. etc, etc,… get it. It’s already been done. The writing sucks, the show sucks, everything about it sucks. I’d rather watch a rerun of internet tonight, or a rerun of a tech show thats not on anymore. I didn’t catch ZDTV, Or Techtv before 2001. Didn’t get it in canada. So that would be great.

Bring back extended play, get Adam and someone to co- host the show thats got some background in the gaming industry. Also I never want to see the two of them dance ever again on tv.

  105. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 9:46 pm

    Leo,

Nice sentiments. I feel that TSS has not been as good since Megan hasn’t been there. I understand that TechTV decided not to allow her to come back on a relaxed schedule. IMO, big mistake! I also understand that she will be joining Call For Help in August. TSS used to be the coolest program on Tech TV. Now, I’d put my money on Xplay and CFH beginning in August.

  106. Anonymous on July 11th, 2003 11:36 pm

Leo, what ever happened to David Spark?

  107. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 1:50 am

I’m so sick of RoboWars and Anime. Thats all that is on all night tonight. TechTV will be out of business in two more months if they dont put on some better shows. At least they should re-run the best show on the network “TSS” at 10 like they use to. Leo is the only thing holding up this network!

  108. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 1:55 am

By the way who buys all these ads during Robowars and Anime? Don’t they know its dead air!

  109. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 5:15 am

Hey Leo, Congrats on 10 years. I love your Screen Savers show. I just hope you continue to do that show for a long time. That is the only show that I can relate to now a days when I am away from my computer. The Internet in my opinion has totally swayed folks from television and more are coming to the PC age. At least that’s the way I see it.

  110. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 5:22 am

Yeah, what happened to Ali? Can’t remember the last time she was on ANYTHING. And it’s debatable if Inside Edition’s “bigger and better”… bigger, yeah, but better? ;)

Suchin Pak started on ZDTV? I only remember her from MTV… thought they just raided MuchMusic for her like they did Rachel Perry (even though she’s on VH1… why?).

They seriously need to toss some of the newer shows and rerun TSS. That was the only time I could see it… the 10:00 PM (Eastern) replay. Someone needs to remind tPTB that there’s a reason Robotica and Battlebots got cancelled, and that Robot Wars isn’t on TNN–wait, now they can be Spike TV. Maybe they figured shows that were technically innovative would draw… that’d explain why they’ve canned Thunderbirds and Max Headroom.

In defense of Morgan, she brings something good to the show. At least she helps temper the assclown tendencies of Adam. (Even though Around the Horn has a better Disembodied Voice… probably to compensate for Max Kellerman hosting.)

Mike: Since no one else seems to have answered this, yes, Leo’s married. (I think. He hasn’t mentioned a wife, or even a baby mama.)

Ten years… damn. I’m just looking to start my career… know any TV stations looking for an aspiring producer? Gotta be cheap to live there, though, so it kinda rules out TechTV. :P

  111. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 5:25 am

    Hi Leo!

I have to admit that I’m deepy disturbed at this trend of laying off good people.

Nothing against you, Leo, but I really miss Kate. We don’t know the truth behind what happened to her, but I have my suspicians. I don’t believe she left on her own accord. At least not the screensavers.

Kate made the show fun. We were able to be serious, but funny at the same time. Now that she is gone, everything is so over-done, stale, and commercial.

Now we have Chris Pirillo leaving Call for Help. He made the show informative, yet funny and just downright fun. I think your people have made, and are making some BIG mistakes. I see TechTV on it’s way out. After all.. Being good and always professional can also be very boring. Boring TV always meets its end.

Please don’t take my comments personal. All of you guys made a package that made your show what it once was.

    Good Luck

  112. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 6:52 am

It’s been 10 years? Man, sure doesn’t seem that long.

Out of all those names, I easily miss Dvorak the most. Dvorak just had a clever, snide presence. Always had comments with an edge of sarcasm. I know some people didn’t like it, but I sure did. I was just thinking a few days ago about when he took heat for saying the colored iBooks looked like “purses”. He wasn’t disrespectful, but he was unapologetic. Very refreshing. :) I read his print columns on occasion but it’s never the same as TV.

Anyway, I hope TechTV continues to be a fulfilling part of your career. Many of us enjoy and appreciate your work.

  113. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 11:20 am

It’s obvious that since Xplay’s recent ratings boost that the SS producers are actively going after this market even more than before; “hacker week”. I can only hope that the new owner’s vision for the network is at least consistent, and reek less of desperation. You need some people who will just do their job, and not run around in a panic. This can be embarrassing.

  114. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 11:39 am

Leo I just found out who the new potential TTV owners are. I’m sorry, but at least the early days were fun! Eventually all those wide open Western towns ended up with ladies leagues and temperance movements!

  115. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 5:37 pm

    Leo,

Although to the dismay of loosing Sumi and the rest along the way we must look at the good that the newcommers bring to the show.

And another thing……I’ve been watching TechTV for over 2 years now and have seen alot of changes in that time but the one change that gets me bent the most…………..

    YOU BUMPED OFF PIRILLO………..

  116. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 8:35 pm

I’m sorry to hear that Sumi left. She was one of my favorites there. It was only a matter of time before someone picked her up. I stumbled on TechTV by accident around 3-4 years ago. Me not being a tech head found it very interesting programming. You are “THE MAN” Leo. I always found the shows you were on interesting. Seemed everytime I had a question it would either be covered by Call for Help or Screensavers the next time I watched the shows. Keep up the great work.

  117. Anonymous on July 12th, 2003 11:47 pm

Leo, I’m surprised that only one other commenter mentioned your role as Dev Null on MSNBC’s “the site”. And when you were interviewing the animator from the “Pirates” movie showing the motion-capture people in the skeletons scene, I was waiting for you to mention the similarity to what you did… or was it similar?

(And do you ever read comments this far down the thread?)

I’ve been a fan of both you and Soledad O’Brien ever since “the site”. With a name that seems like a one-person newsroom diversity program, she’s still one of the best no-frills reporter/newsreaders on TV today and one of the very few who has never made me cringe with something dumb she said/did/asked on-air (and that includes that ‘techie’ show). I used to watch ONLY the weekend edition of “Today”, and I hope she gives the blonde bimbos (female and male) on FoxNews a real run for their ratings. Of course, here on the left coast, it’s on at 4AM, AND opposite the rebroadcasts of TSS and CFH (prime TiVo time), but after the recent news about Megan Marrone (my second-favorite all-time ScreenSaver after you, LL), I may record only the “Call” from now on.

Of course, I hope you will use your almost-nonexistant influence at TechTV to help get Megan some ‘facetime’ on CFH. I wonder if she’d mind being typecast as “CyberMom” to get a themed segment the three days a week she’ll be in-studio…?

One other DUMB thing TechTV is doing… Have you tried typing “thesite.com” into your browser lately? It redirects to a subdirectory in TechTv.com, then 404′s for me. You’d think that domain name would be a valuable piece of intellectual property for the network, and could easily be made more valuable.

But I’m giving TTV too much free advice… I should do an ‘entertainment’ feature on it in my news satire site (bwahahahaha…)

Leo– don’t feel bad about feeling like the last one standing! I have worked at my job for over 19 years and have trained- and seen- many hundreds of people come and go. I have been through three owners and countless store managers, but I am still here. (This also happens to be my first job- my ‘summer job’ while I went to college. Alas, this worked out better than what I got my degree in! :P)

I too have wondered if I have no ambition, a lot of inertia, or ?? to have lasted in a job that most don’t last more that a few years at the very most! Part of it is that there aren’t a whole lot of good paying jobs in this area, so when you find one, you hang on to it– unless you have the ability to move to somewhere else. I don’t have that– besides, this is HOME– and I like it here.

Please allow me to thank you for all the hard work and effort that you have put into the network, shows, and Leoville. I greatly appreciate it!!

Clearly reverse discrimination. Don’t get me wrong…they’re very talented and all, but a push-up bra is no match your mad skills Leo!

Fight the power my brother! Good things come to those who wait.

    Surfin’ Mex huh…? Nice!

Well, I’ve only been a dedicated viewer since TechTV Canada started (when was that again, just seems like I’ve been watching TSS forever) and for a while TSS was on channel 4 here in Vancouver, that’s right for FREE, and it just ran community news and TSS reruns. That’s when I became hooked. I subscribed for TTV Canada just to watch TSS and that’s still pretty much all I watch. Now that my classes don’t fit as well with the TSS schedule and the reruns are gone, it’s a lot harder to watch. When I was in high school, it would be on at 4:00 pst and I could watch it just as I was getting home. Now I’m lucky if I get the last half hour. And I loved when it was 1 1/2 hrs, not so rushed and it allowed more time for casual talk and goofing around. You guys seemed like a family (Leo, Pat, Megan, Morgam, Martin and Kevin) but now that there have been so many changes, it seems too much like you’re all at work everyday, and it’s not necessarily fun to work there. I try and watch the other TTV shows (sometimes I watch CFH, but that’s noon and I’m almost never home then) but most of the time I see no reason to. Now that Megan is officially off TSS, and not coming back, the only reason I watch is you and Pat. I agree that you have to take Pat with you if you go somewhere else, and you need to make sure wherever you go, that it will air in Canada, or at the very least will be accessible for some sort of a fee from the net. DON’T LEAVE, I NEED YOU IN MY TECH LIFE!!! You’ve taught me and my family and freidns so much, and without you, I just may lose interest in TTV as a whole (not in tech though.)

TechTV needs to return to its roots!! The good old days if you will. Get rid of this Unscrewed and Wired for Sex crap and start playing shows that are worthy of the name “Tech”TV.

  122. Anonymous on July 13th, 2003 8:47 pm

Interesting read, this entire set of followups to Leo’s blog.

I’m also in Vancouver, and like the fellow a few posts above, caught TSS on the cable access locally before Shaw Cable offered TechTV. I got hooked, and when TechTV came available, I was a subscriber within a few days.

I loved the all day-live aspect of TechLive. Liked watching Dvorak’s show. Sort of enjoyed Call for Help. Really liked the 90 minute TSS.

Then TechLive was cut back. People laid off. Then Dvorak and a bunch of other shows were cut. More layoffs.

But Chris Pirillo came to (prior to the massive layoffs) CFF, and I was happy. I knew Chris from LG, but I was very proud of him and his ability to first get the show, then second, to make it “his own”, and a fun show. As a seasoned tech-vet, it didn’t matter how newbie-ish the content was on CFF, Chris made it good.

Then more shows cut. TSS down to 60 minutes. I was looking at my cable bill thinking, is it worth still paying for this stuff?

Then the final straw. Pirillo was fired from CFF. I don’t know what happened behind the scenese, but along with a long series of blunders and bad calls, this was the worst. Within 15 days, TechTV was no longer on my cable bill.

I only just (re)discovered Leoville because Leo has a Moblog over at TextAmerica, where I have one too. Reading through this thread, it appears that I’m not the only one who has become immensely disatisfied with TTV.

Now Leo, don’t get me wrong at all with the above – first, congrats on the 10 years. Second, you absolutely rock on TSS, and I was majorly dissapointed with the 90 to 60 min time change because it meant less of Leo and Pat. But CFF developed a real character and soul under Pirillo, and that firing was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back for me.

Thanks, Leo you taught me everything I know about tech to this day, I started watching back in 99′ and have been a faithful viewer eversince. You should do all you can to get back the good shows like audio file and some others and get this crap like wired for sex off the air. I am 13 and appaled that techtv would put such a show on I miss the good ol’ days when it was all about computers and the important things in tech. TSS and CFH are the good ol shows and need to be like when they were in 2001 that was a good year for TTV if we could get the something like the old programming back It would change ttv so much for the better and probably bring back and more viewers. Then ttv would be great, Congrats on the 10 yr. mark keep going strong, you do a great job. I like the idea of keeping the old shows and ditch WFS, Unscrewed and thank God the thunder birds are gone. You should deffinetly play more of those old movies like you did back when. Please Leo if you could change ttv just a bit it would make all of us proud. great Blog, Thanks, Patrick

    Hi again, Leo.

I hope you, and especially some of the Tech TV management are reading this stuff. As you can see, people are not happy.

You will find comments like these all over the internet. I for one was actully ticked when Kate was dumped off the screensavers and placed in the “gaming department”, but got really upset when she left completely.

I manged somehow to deal with that and got over it, but when Chris Pirillo was canned…. I’m not sure I can move on this time. What is management thinking? They have totaly destroyed what The Screensavers/ZDTV once was, and now they are destroying TechTV.

I most likely will also be removing it from my satellie linup.

Leo is great, but I was paying for a package deal. Leo is having to work double time to keep management’s as* afloat.

    What a shame..

Things has been very quiet the last week. The TechTV deal makers must have really put the gags on. What I really dread is that after the purchase. They always send in the hatchet person to clean up the old mess. They have a meeting, give you the old pep talk and, “how valuable of asset” you are speech. The whole time they’re preparing someone up to replace you. The only way you can buy a company today is to promise the bank you can reduce salaries by 20%.

  127. Anonymous on July 15th, 2003 7:34 pm

    Guyz,

WTF happend to your format?! Your network has become the TNT of technology television! Hokey, Simply tachy, uneducational and NOT funny!! :(

It is obvious that you have given the reins to a network director that doesnt understand the first thing about what your demographic expects! :( Fire him please!! Rehire whoever was in charge in the ZDTV “Golden Days”!!, PLEASE!!

What actually happed to Tech tv news? Silicon spin? John C Devorack was your Bill O’Reilly for Christ’s sake. You cant argue that at least half your audience tuned into the latest Silicon news show!!

What the hell is up with playing hours of redundant “Robot wars” and outdated “Thunderbird” series? Are you trying to cater to 12 year olds?!! Your station has become a cliche’! Is that supposed to be cool? Your “eye drops” is cool but already dated due to the idea of playing tons of ammatuer dabbler 3d animated shorts. It needs to be seasonal.

Your format has become about as cool as Patrick Norton! Its obvious this guy has never had any formal training in the entertainment sector. The guy isnt funny and doesnt know the first thing about timming.(I know hes your friend Leo,but) He always seems nervous, short of breath and Hes constanlty outclasssed by your “nerd correspondants” who themselves arent professional consultant either, but more like “Neo-Geeks”.

It is completely obvious that Leo Lepor has to carry Patrick constantly. And Patrick’s drab performances are starting to effect Leo’s energy who, BTW, is about your only valuable asset left!!

Jezuz Christ TTV your ratings have must hit rock bottom. If any other Tech station emerges lookkout, cause ANYTHING worth 2 cents could put you guyz 6 feet under!!

Let me tell you(free of charge) who is a valuable asset to your station.(It’s obvoius your network managment has lost touch)

Leo Lepor – Your buddah, Dahli Lama, your only true entertainment talent. Get rid of this guy and you have no Network.

Martin Sergent – funny ass hell, risky, timming, can carry a show by himself. Lucky that you found this guy in your “Nerd farm”

Sumy daus – Hot as hell, drawing, classy, interesting to watch and listen too. Can definelty sell the “gear”.

Beck Worley – The best you have in female anchor. Can deliver the news, go with the flow, charming, witty, doesnt over do it.

Who you shouldna got rid of(or let go without paying more money)

John C devorak – The O’Reilly of ZDTV.(Fire your contract negotiator for this one)

Solodad O’Brien – Hot AND serious, a must watch

Chris Pirillo – The perfect FUN nerd!

Kate Botello – cutest nerd honey on the planet!

Jim Louderback – professional to the point in a “to the point show”.

    People to get rid of.

Patrick Norton. This guy is obvoiusly a newphew of a station exec. Absolute zero talent and/or entertainment value. I could understand if he was at least funny or good-looking or he actually became better with time. Never should have been allowed a chance as co-host.

Jessica and Sarah -Obvoiusly cheap Labor, or some kinda new “Intership” concept.

Shows you shouldna got rid of

    “Silicon Spin”

    “The Money Machine”

    “Internet Tonight”

    “Extended Play”

    Shows you need to keep

    Big Thinkers

    Call for help

    Screen Savers

    Fresh Gear

Show you need to get rid of

    Robot wars(dead air)

Anime unleashed(dead air) I dont know if you know this, but not many mainstream tech people like cheap japenese animation! WTF is the deal with “ANIME”

Future fighting machines(Discovery already has you beat here. plus your versions all seem to be reruns of the same 3 shows)

Spy school.(WTF is that = (dead air)

Unscrewed(give Martin another edgy show, hes worthy)) = Do you actually have any writers for unscrewed or is it completly improvised?

    Maxheadroom = Max headache(dead air)

P.S. Vulcan Ventures can goto hell! They have ruined a perfectly good network format.

Paul Allen is NOT paying attention.(Maybe hes to busy lazing around on his yacht drinking Martinis) Where Job’s? He knows whats cool!

  131. Anonymous on July 16th, 2003 1:56 am

Ahhhh, I think back to when I first discovered ZDTV. I had just had surgery and was laid up for a few days and wasn’t supposed to move around. Flipping around I find this incredible network and was immediately hooked. I was in love with Victoria (dark hair, dark eyes – oh my!). They had viewers on their netcams during commercial breaks. Leo was on CFH but dressed a little more wildly for TSS. Scott Herriott was on Internet Tonight – I remembered him from Walt Disney World Inside Out (hated the couch)! Meghan Marks did love stuff (again Oh My!)

Many have taken this chance to TTV bash, but I think Leo was just looking back at the past and remembering the good ol’ days. Have you noticed that no matter what it is – it’s always better ‘back then’.

Oh well, best of luck in your next 10 years no matter what you’re doing but know this. There is no TTV without you.

  132. Anonymous on July 16th, 2003 2:26 am

I hope TechTV is smart enough to financially encourage you to stick around. The original talent is slowly trickling away… I wish I could go back in time and Tivo all the pre-TechTV episodes… I feel as if the information was more complete and the Hosts (not you Leo) had more charisma. I would like to see some Turns for the better!

  133. Anonymous on July 16th, 2003 6:10 am

Wow…sad to see some of the changes at TTV/ZDTV. I don’t know what I’m going to do with my 120hr Tivo now that there are less TTV shows worth recording.

Best regards for the future, Leo.

About three weeks ago I purchased one of those eighty dollar 120 gig drives. I was unable to get it to work so I sent it back. The new one should have been here weeks ago except for an incorrect address. Anyway it finally got here yesterday and maxtor upgraded me to 160 gigs for my trouble! I now have two days of DVD quality taping time. Could you run out and buy five or six dvd burners in the next week or two?

TSS stands for The Sarah Show? Who would have thunk it?

  135. Anonymous on July 16th, 2003 3:36 pm

  136. Anonymous on July 17th, 2003 10:44 am

Adam Sessler and Leo Rock, I’m glad you guys are sticking around. I love Xplay and TSS. I only wish TechTv would pay you guys more, you deserve it and I know those corporate crooks can afford it or is this is all about prestige? HM…what do you guys think, the former or the ladder is why they move.

  137. Anonymous on July 18th, 2003 4:37 am

To everyone saying Leo bumped off Pirillo, Leo was the original, the one, and the only REAL host Call for Help will ever see.

Adelphia originally gave us the channel as a share channel w/ the local stuff in 98 or so (then after it got its own Comcast killed it in all of NJ but that’s another story for another time), and I loved it even though I couldn’t see CFH and TSS live (the local stuff ran from 5 to 11).

I enjoyed the days of the CFH players, Leo first using 802.11b on the original iBook on CFH (ironically I’m on wifi right now), installing Linux on the air on TSS, and the total geek out stuff. Internet Tonight had some awesome stuff on it, I loved the surf guru.

When did TTV jump the shark? When TechLive arrived. That started the transition to nothing but business related stuff. I wanted technology, not a screen 1/2 filled with stock quotes (that side ticker was the most annoying thing ever).

I guess I’m not missing too much w/ the channel gone from my lineup.

  138. Anonymous on July 19th, 2003 1:48 am

Wow 10 years!! Leo I hope that you dont go, you and the gang is what makes me want to turn on my tv, but if you do leave i’ll still buy your books and go here. I’ll miss Sumi and if you talk to her and she says MSNBC wants you, please think about it!!!

  139. Anonymous on July 19th, 2003 10:15 am

Just an interesting aside, Jessica is listed on the ‘Gone But Not Forgotten’ section of the ‘About Us’ link on the TSS site. Thought some might find it amusing…

  140. Anonymous on July 19th, 2003 4:26 pm

Well if you guys need any replacement staff I think I’m ready to join the staff! ^_^

  141. Anonymous on July 19th, 2003 8:14 pm

Did we ever find out why Kate left TSS? She was just so awesome on the show, and then one day just gone. I ahve always wondered….

As for the current show, I really enjoy it. Sarah looks terribly unhappy to be there, but the rest of the crew gives us interesting little tips, etc. I have enjoyed the trend for “more tech guests.”

Anywho, congrats Leo…I love ya on the show, but am also ready for a weekly/daily Radio show from you again :)

    “Leo,

    G”

Things like this piss me off. Some of you guys tend to brown nose Leo Laporte. Why? His book sucked. He should write a book telling how he got Chris Pirillo canned because I know his @$$ had something to do with it. Martin SarzFAG didn’t need that show. Who gives a FUK about him. I hope with all the hype about GNOMEDEX that you seriously get acknowledged for being a total ditz. I wish C.P. was still working there. It would be an awesome accoplishment for you to get CP his show back. I could care less if you were there force. You don’t have the Chris Pirillo vibe going. Grow your hair out. Dye it black. Wear the glasses. Have a hot wife. Be geekier. Maybe I’ll consider watch….nah even with that I’ll just call you a weirdo. For all the Leo brown nosers just this question. WHY? I’d rather follow Kevin Rose, or that Sarah Lane chick. I HATE the fact that you bumped off Chris Pirillo. Your book will never ever be bought by me. I will make sure I tell everyone in the world that your book is a complete waste of time and to go with lockergnome. You suck Leo. Brown nosers suck. I’m glad that TechTV no longer shows here in my part of texas. I wouldn’t be able to stomach the Leo Laporte face. Let’s Call it LeoTV. How about that. Then we can add one of your sheeps face on there.

    not a fan,

ZDTV and TechTV have been my favorite Satellite/cable channel since finding it on channel 191 on the Dish Network. I have been with the Dish since Dec 1996 and started watching “Call for Help” with you and Kate shortly thereafter. When did you first broadcast on the DishNetwork and where was the first cable transmission from? Keep up the good work

Leo, I’ve only been watching you for a few months, but I’ve gotta say I kick myself that I missed the first 10 years. You’re one computerizing, demystifying, calmifying, no-balogna-fyzin’ machine! Thanks for all the good info in such a short period of time…please don’t go away too soon!

yep those were the good old ZDTV day !!! I started watching on 1999, Call for help really helped me out back then when I was a sophomore comp sci student and a first time pc user, after a couple of months I graduated to The Screen Savers… I hope they bring back the old hard core tech show format… Congratulations on your 10th year a TTV, I really haven’t seen any shows from TTV since last year, our cable subscriber took TTV out of our channel listings, but I still visit the web site, that’s why I haven’t seen the new guys (morgan et all.) on TV yet, but I hope the bring back the gub old days if you know what is mean. Thanks !!!

  152. Anonymous on July 24th, 2003 7:58 am

I’ve been watching Tech TV since 1998. Back then, though, it was canned via a UHF Channel here in the Philippines (Net 25) and when I saw it for the first time, I never tuned away (I’m 9 years old then, when everyone else enjoyed the PS One). But they pulled the plug for other shows. Today, I’m watching it through satellite. One thing though, some programs are a bit late by a few days. Is this because this is the International TTV Channel? Anyway, I really miss the old crew, AND the Windows 98 CD in CFH (You know, Break Glass in Case of Emergency?). Well, I hope Leo stays.

Thanks for all the years Leo.

I started watching ZDTV late 1998 when I didnt even have a PC.

Man, I had forgotten about THE SURF GURU.

    Those where the days.

Im glad I taped some of those old TSS shows.

  155. Anonymous on July 26th, 2003 4:37 am

I remember, my cable provider started carrying ZDTV the first day it was ever on the air, and I just happened to stumble upon it on that date. I was instantly hooked.

In late 1998, I wrote to ZDTV and requested and received an autographed picture of Leo and Kate on the original Screen Savers set.

It hangs proudly over my monitor now. I wonder how much it’s worth?

  156. Anonymous on July 28th, 2003 1:42 am

Don’t watch it anymore as all the “zing” is

gone and now Sumi is gone and that’s it for me.

Oh, I forgot, still watch “Robot Wars” and hope

    it will last.

    Hey Leo,

I started watching you on The Site with Soldad O’Brian, and back then, CNet Central, The Site, and Computer Chronicals (which I’ve watched since the eighties) were about the only tech shows on TV. Of course that was before being a nerd was cool :)

And you know what they say… every OS needs it’s killer app, and you’re Tech TV’s killer app. If you left, I don’t see how they’d survive.

    Take care.

I’ve been an avid fan of TSS for years. Here at the office, we had it on the TV up front for the longest time and it was always nice to pop up front and see a little of the old TechLive during the day during a break.

I still watch TSS on a regular basis — every day during lunch when the re-run the previous night’s show. Mostly for Leo’s unbiased ways, but also because they do sometimes teach me something new. This is important for me since I am most definately biased, being pro-Linux and recently, very pro-OSX. Keep up the good work there, Leo

And Sumi going to MSNBC. I have always thought she was very cute…so now I have to watch *that* station to see her? Bummer. lol

  162. Anonymous on August 5th, 2003 9:38 pm

My only complaint about ZDTV has been its lack of serious high tech. It is another TV network – period. Yes there is chat from time to time. Yes it “TALKS” about high tech. But it isn’t using high tech other than what exists with the normal TV network.

  163. Anonymous on August 6th, 2003 5:41 pm

IF the BORG said “LEO YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE”, then LEO would say “I SEE YOU HAVEN’T UPDATED YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM LATELY.”

Leo you would be a cool starship captain but only if Patrick plays engineer and Chris Perillo plays the vulcan science officer or ship’s psychiatrist.

Sumi is Babe-ilicous, I didn’t mind watching if the product looked stupid,

He was a nice enough guy, whatever that guys name was who co hosted with her, but Sumi was obviously the brains of the show….always got the vibe the dude didn’t know what he was saying and just reading from cue cards…just pointing that out so the geek girls out there don’t think I’m a total git thinking Sumi is a cutie!

    Good Luck Sumi!

  165. Anonymous on August 8th, 2003 1:41 am

Wow. Alot of hostility here. How about wishing the best to those who have left (by their own choice or otherwise), continued success to those who are here, and good luck to future personalities?

In particular, I think Patrick is great. It is nice to see someone who struggles with timing and gets distracted sometimes. It shows he is human. A person who is there for his knowledge and not his showmanship. And as for the ladies of TSS, I enjoy seeing that women can be smart and hot at the same time.

Leo, congrats to you and Adam on your longevity. I hope that you are able to stay as long as it is right for you. If you ever move on, it will be a loss for the network and a great boon for your next employer.

Try to remember everyone that the station is run by humans, and humans make mistakes. Maybe some talents should have been kept, others released, but hopefully we can enjoy what they have and glean some benefit from the knowledge they share with us.

I hope Leo that if you do leave the show and go on to better ventures that you will still keep Leoville alive and I hope that the next place you go that you can broadcast to Canada or you are going to have to give me some real good antenna tips!!!I would hate to have to move again.Well Leo Godspeed and we are all behind you.

I for one am glad Leo is back on CFH. I can’t believe most of you guys actually liked that pipsqueak Pirillo. He has got to be the most annoying geek on TV. I actually stopped watching CFH because of that guy. Plus I hated the “new” set when Leo left; it was too sterile.

I did hate it when Kate left TSS (but she was the perfect compliment to Adam on EP) and then TTV altogether. She had that cute goofiness going for her. She had more personality than most of the newer on air talent at TTV now.

Last, but certainly not least, I miss seeing Erica Hill. I still have a bit of a crush on Miss Hill but not enough of one to watch whatever News channel she moved on to (MSNBC?).

Leo – great work over the years. TTV wouldn’t be TTV without you. I hope you stay indefinitely but if you decide to leave one day I certainly wish you all the best.

I accidentally found ZDTV about 4 years ago switching channels on my C-band satellite. ‘Call For Help’ was on at the time. At first glance, I thought the channel was just another HSN or QVC, peddling PC’s or something. Then I realized it was a ‘tech’ channel. I was impressed when I first saw CFH. While in college I watched TheScreensavers with my roommate just about every day, either live or replayed three hours later. I liked how John C. Dvorak would give a preview of the upcoming ‘Silicon Spin’, a ‘Meet The Press’. I miss watching Dvorak, the guy was great, knew his stuff, had a hint of humor. I don’t understand why TTV quit on Dvorak.

Watching TTV was like a watching a family, key word there – WAS -. Call for Help with Chris Pirillo. Kate Botello on TheScreenSavers, then Extended Play. Pat and Leo on TheScreenSavers, Dvorak on Silicon Spin, and others. Successful people who have a large fan base, such as Kate and Chris, just don’t leave unless they are seriously disgruntled or laid off. Having watched Chris on CFH, and Kate on TSS and ExtPlay, neither seemed to be disgruntled. These are the folks that defined the network, people!!! If you let them go, you kill off a piece of your identity!

In short, I don’t watch TechTV any longer save for TheScreenSavers. I can’t watch CallForHelp anymore, cuz it’s just not the same. Leo’s there only to bail it out. Even the Screensavers is not the same anymore, now only 60 minutes long, and on just once.

I thought the dot com slide was over in the Silicon Valley. In that case, what’s going on TechTV?

Leo, if you ever leave it will be the end of ZDTV/TechTV. You are why we watch. You are the coolest! You have a huge fan base and we all appreciate you more than you could imagine. Stick with it man!! Make them give you a huge raise, but stick with it!
